Hello community,
I'm a VJ newbie and I need some help:
We (www.the-twist-and-shout.de) like to make a multimedia-show during our live performance (I play in a Beatles Revival Band).
I like to start/stop/switch MPEG1 video streams via pc keyboard, without any effects and heavy layering (the videos have to start imediate, maybe in a preloaded way). I also like to take a live video from the audience wie digicam and layer the live stream with the MPEG1. For visual effects I have already Video Jockey R3 and I like to combine the R3 output with the keystroke software.

What will be the best (and stable) soft (maybe freeware).

My system:
pc, athlon 2000+ with windows XP home edition
512Mb Ram, 2x 80GB IBM deskstar (7200U/min), ATI Radeon 8500 AllINWONDER

To simply trigger video samples without effects, have a look at MidiVid (http://www.midivid.com). It's a freeware. :) By the way MPEG isn't really the best format for this kind of stuff, too compressed and so it takes too much CPUs. AVIs compressed with Cinepak, Mideo, Indeo or PicVideo MJPEG codecs will play much faster.

Or maybe if your using MPEG1 anyway and you don't need to alter the speed or use FX, you might just use a couple of discman VCD players, through your mixer.... this is a compter free (hence pretty much hassle free) solution I guess :)

MPEG is a fine format as long as it's MPEG-1 CBR... and as long as it's a fairly low MBps (max 2 MBps).

Old soft I wrote can do that fairly easily... but only works on one clip and doesnt do capture support. Could rewrite for a and maybe for B

Miemi (freeware) will play mpeg1 quite handily, and you can cycle thru a list of clips by hitting one key, also some neat effects (I know you aren't interested in the effects)...also peep Moonster, but be warned, its not the most stable (but what app is?)

Since you already have visualJockey R3 I thought you might be interested to learn that the Booster02 plugin pack that is going to be released soon will let you play mpg and mov files.
