Has anybody tried a copy of Isadora? http://www.troikatronix.com/isadora.html
I saw a beta of it and it seemed pretty good. Just wondered if anyone had any hands on experience.

Hi, I'm a registered user and bought in after I tried out other programs on the Mac. I love the program! Why? It's fast, stable, runs on OS X, it's modular and flexible, and the user interface is very well thought out and easy to use. Also, the developer is very responsive and bug fixes are done quick. Any specific questions?

I too have only ever seen an alpha version for the pc. As far as i can understand it is a viable alternative to NATO. Am i right? How programmable is it? Can u write ur own modules? Is it worth the money? What environments have u used it in? I'm looking for an all encompasing prog, one that I can use to VJ on a saturday and install into an environment on the sunday (plus it must make toast!).

A viable alternative to NATO? I'm not sure, I haven't used NATO but I do use MAX/MSP and Isadora is a lot easier and more enjoyable to program. I think NATO has more effects . I don't believe you can write your own modules but you can put the ones there are into any configuration you want. The developer mentioned to me a plan to let users create custom macros of module groups. I think where it might beat NATO is in the ease with which you can use it interactively (via midi or mouse/key) and being able to quickly jump between different patches.
I'm a performance artist and also do video installations and am not sure just what a VJ needs. I haven't used it in a show yet but the developer is part a dance group that has been around for quite a while. I saw them perform using interactive midi sensors and video 6-7 years ago. I know Isadora has been developed and tested extensively over the years in live contexts. The Wooster Group is using it in their next piece.
It is worth the money.

Hi - I'm Mark Coniglio the developer/creator of Isadora. I was glad to see a topic on my software here, and thanks to those who have given it compliments.
Regarding the PC version -- I know that it is problematic at this point -- that's why it is alpha. However, now that the Mac version is feature complete, I will be able to spend more time on the PC version and really get it into shape. I hope that some of you here will give it another try when it goes beta, because I think you'll be much more pleased.
Regarding "writing your own modules", there is a "user actor" that allows you to create your own modules from one or more Isadora actors. Also, I will be releasing an SDK that will allow third-party developers to create there own plugins for the program as soon as the Mac version goes 1.0.
Cheers,
Mark
