:help:
I'm working on my DJ/VJ set now. To help out with this, I've just acquired about 6,000 12" of back catalogue. There are some really rare tunez in this collection. They encompass everything from recent releases to original rare recordings from the early nineties (Why, Why, Why backed with Rez, for example. Four mixes of Acerperience for another example.)
Problem is I need to transfer all these to MP3 to play out. And I don't have the time.
If there's anyone out there looking to do the AV thing, and looking for rare back catalogue, and has some time to help, I'm looking for someone to help me make the transfers. I'm too damn busy to get through them in less than a year. My studio is based in Clapham, and I've got a kick ass cappucino machine to make life more pleasant.
PM me if interested.

A very good idea, but first they have to get from vinyl to digital. I've found I can digitize about 4 records per hour (including listening and weeding out the crap).

Kriel:
Is it possible for you to digitise to WAV format, as opposed to MP3?
I swear there is discernable audio compression and quality loss for MP3s played on a quality, club system, even at high (128k+) bit rates. The bass just lacks punch and warm overtones (much like MiniDisc).
I would store the music in 16-bit, 44.1 kHx WAV/AIFF files, if at possible, or CD-Audio format.

Kriel,
Back at school (a few years ago) one teacher had an autoloading record player. I've not been able to find any more information on the web yet but I know his could play over 8 vinyls in a row.
Something like that may take a little bit of time out of the process.
A random thought:
How much quality would you loose if setting the record player to 2x normal speed and then stretching the digital recording back out when you're doing your conversion to MP3? (Probably too much, but it would shorten things)
I've got way too much on over the next month to help out :( but come december I may have a day or two to spare.

Oh, and what ADC are you using? Just your soundcard? Something else?

You're right. It would be too great a loss of quality. Sampling at 48kHz, you'd lose everything above 12kHz, but the bass would really rich!
I'm using M-Audio's Quattro for USB input to an iMac. Peak DV for digitizing/editing, Dragon Burn on a SuperDrive to make the CDs (for archive and easy MP3 import), and iTunes to reimport them to Traktor on a 12" PowerBook.
Dude, December's fine. I betcha I'll be working on this in 2007. By then Ibiza will be like Las Vegas, and Manumission will be Circus Circus...

I remember when you were not allowed to export encryption programs out of the USA... but you were allowed to print out all the source code and send it over in tens of ringbinders. Europeans wanted the technology so they devided up the ringbinders between quite a few people and got it all scanned in over a month or two.
Maybe you should ask people whether they would be willing to do the rip to your specifications, but in their homes/studios.
The "distributed vinyl-mp3 project 2003/2004" or something like that.
Actually, with 6,000 vinyls you've got quite an archive. Any chance you could convince the Bodleian Library ()http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/ , holds every book published and loves to collect other stuff) that your vinyl should be archived (digitally) for future generations... it would then be a case of going to the library and just ripping the CD's / DVD's to your IBook (+ many external drives)
