Being in the UK, wellREDman and I use PAL sized 720 x 576 files for archiving. We use a mixture of uncompressed, Targa streams, Perception PVD files (it's specific to our hardware and compressed about 4:1), and DV codec clips. We haven't found a gig yet where DV is too compressed, and if our material is based on DV footage we don't bother upsampling it.

Having had a scare recently where our gigging machine was dropped down the stairs, I'm currently in the process of burning about 25 Gb of video down to CD.
It's taking a while but I don't mind doing it.

I store mine in Open Media Format (Avid Files) for production use, and then copy down either into Cinepak 80-100s or MPEG-1 CBRs @ 700-1800 bps. Of all three I prefer CBR MPEG for performance, as CBR MPEG is easily interpretable, is easily sharable, and works will for storing a clip @ 320/240 (DivX only really pays off when dealing with clips of higher resolution).

Used to use 320x240 25fps 80% cinepak on my old lappy (366mhz running SVi). Now just upscaled slightly same codec/compression but now 400x300....

But remember ppl CHUNKY IS FUNKY!!

Since I've started migrating over to VCDs, I've been using mpg1 @ 352x240 (or 288 for PAL) @ 29.97fps @ 1150 kb/s

and yes, chunky IS funky...
