Hi there.
Our resident visuals guy has had to cancel on us.
We run a minimal house/techno/electronica night at a bar in London called Public Life - 5 mins from Liverpool Street tube and we need someone for visuals this Saturday, 8pm til 2am.
Unfortunately we are only on a very low budget so can only offer about ?20 in beer money.
If you're interested then email or call us asap and you're on!

20 pounds! is that what you pay your dj's as well?
sounds like you're running a cheap night there.
Add another zero to your fee and you might get some decent visuals...

You are free to ask. And at least you are honest about how much you want to pay.
All I will say is that if you 'need' a VJ (as you stated) then you can afford to pay. MAybe you do not 'need' one. *shrug*

Maybe a bit heavy handed in my first reply, sorry... it all depends what you want from your night...maybe something forgetable just anything to fill the screen, or something eastheticaly vibrant, pulsating exiting visuals that contribute to lifting the crowd and drawing them back again.
I expect you (clevermusic) have decent speakers and probably want good music to be pumped out of them. Do you realise that your video screen is also a speaker? The only diference is that it pumps out occular stimulation.
All i'm trying to say is that you should make sure that all the sensual stimulations are treated equaly, believe me the punters will notice it.
:) ;) :P   :D :( :) :P ;)

yeah, I've stood back on this so far.. if we attack people who post here looking for vjs who have no budget, then they will not bother anymore.. ?20 is not enough for many of us on this board, but for those looking for a first gig, maybe it is.. at least as Rova said there is honesty.. if ?20 isn't enough for you, don't respond.. or if you are interested but want more, ask the question..
as for cheap crappy night, I can happily say that some of the best nights i've been to have been run on a zero budget.. cheap maybe, but crappy? go there and judge for yourself..
Hope something works out for you clevermusic, money is a very touchy subject for alot of people round here, as vj's are usually undervalued in terms of the amount of time put in for a gig..

yea you're right Pilotx, just a bit pissed of today, I'm sure someone will benefit from doing gig for exposure, lets just hope it gives our artform a good name.

I stil think the problem arises as their 'regular' VJ does this for nothing / ?20.
Therefore does this mean the promoter thinks that how much VJ's cost. That is my biggest problem.

thats cool lucid.. it was also a response to other threads that have gone a similar way (although your cheap, crappy remark irked me ;)
I think that the person would probably benefit more from the experience than the exposure, that's what I was really thinking.
Rova, agree with you 100%, but from what clevermusic has said about this being a night in a bar it is unlikely to be a large night, and personally I reckon it is bettr to have vj's at these small nights then not at all, those who value their services higher will not take the gig.. promotors will learn that they pay more for higher quality (I hope) and less experienced vj's can play for less money at smaller nights..

i've done a job there for nowt. for an arts collective.... its a tiny converted loo with interesting challenges for someone with imagination and resources...am sadly with my daughter( not sadly totally of course!! she's fab!) this weekend so cant offer my services, but i'd encourage anyone local to try.... its a nice bar and the visuals would be right in peoples faces so its a good free exhibition opportunity!!

thanks for all the replies, sorry but i haven't had a chance to come back here til now...
all points have been taken in, but it is a small venue (approx 85 capacity) - that's why we're offering such a little amount. I run the night with a friend and we both DJ - we'll be lucky to make ?20 each after taxis and stuff.....
We see it as giving someone (admittedly most likely to be 1st timers) the opportunity to showcase what ever the hell they want for free drinks all night...
unfortunately we had no responses.... :(
just to let you know - i think you'll find that most firsttimer DJs are lucky to get even a fiver on their first gig..... it's all about the experience and getting yourself seen/heard...
We would never offer a fee as low as ?20 for a large club night where we would be making a profit - those who do are twats. As far as we are concerned, any VJ will take the same cut of profit as a DJ.
