I know quite a few people are interested in the idea of collaborating with artists from other fields to create shows. For example working with animators, short film makers, painters, sculptors etc etc.

Done correctly I think such a relationship could be very beneficial for all parties. Artists may want new venues & mediums to present their work to a new audience. VJs want great content for shows, and as time goes on I guess more people are looking for greater depth and more unique style to their shows. Some VJs dont really want to spend time on raw content creation, they love the performance side of it. On the otherhand obviously there are plenty of artists who dont need us and plenty of VJs who are in no need of extra content etc.

So anyway, as part of this years AVIT UK we want to get people from other art communities to come along and see what its all about. We've been looking at various forums/communities etc that exist all over the web, and whoa theres a lot! So this got me thinking whether anybody here knows of the busiest forums for various arts, whether theres anybody who is especially interested in this who would like to help spread the word etc etc.

One directory Ive been using so far is this one:

http://www.art-channel.net/artdir/artdir.pl

I also started wondering whether if there are quite a lot of artists who wanna get into this crossover thing, whether it would be nice to have another forum added to vjforums, something like "VJing meets other artforms"?

yes! good idea, beeing an artist and also doing the reactive visual side of things, it's all a continuation of my artwork in a medium that's very exiting and reaches lot's of people.
I must say though the term "vj" does bug me a litle, it sounds second hand...the poor cousin of "dj".
Anyway I'm busy securing this pub/club in brighton for avit and have been thinking of having open discusions on the easthetics of reactive visuals, live visuals as an artform etc...
If it all comes together you are welcome to join in with related topics.

will keep you guys posted.

cheers

Elbows, I get mailouts from this group Shooting People-

http://shootingpeople.org/index.php

They cover film, animation, music video direction, scriptwriting etc- posting something there would be a good thing...... there's loads of short film screening nights which are getting vjs in as part of the evening ;)

it good to here of people who are interested crossing over different creative fields.
i'm working on a long term project at the mo, with spoken word performers, live music and live visuals.
i'm really inspired by the idea of getting the whole thing jamin and reacting and bouncing in three ways. for me it definatley a more content driven visual performance that comes out of working with spoken word, which is definatly pushing my boundries. so collaborations get a big thumbs up from me:yep:

as for forum idea... nice i would be into that

Any idea for a shorter forum name?

Would it be combined with AV stuff?

The name 'Intermedia' was coined by the 60s art group Fluxus to describe this emergence and convergence of genres, maybe it would be good to use here?

"Dick Higgins |_Intermedia <1962>
Fluxus artist Dick Higgins describes a branch of American post-modernism from the 1960s that reflects the tumultuous social atmosphere of the era and its impact on the arts. Higgins attention is focused on Intermedia, a myriad of emerging genres that spilled across the boundaries of traditional media. In the interseces between the arts, mixed-media forms coalesced: Happenings, performance art, kinetic sculpture, electronic theater, as well as a variety of deliberately uncategorizable works ? such as in Philip Corner's Piano Activities and his own Danger Music #2 from 1962."

I don't know we can go too diverse about this with new forums, etc. I mean what do jugglers realy have to do with VJing?

I don't think we need a new forum yet, let's get some discussions on it first, Kay?

Talk about synchronicity (which as a Lacanian I don't officially believe in): for anyone out there who subscribes to the excellent NEW MEDIA CURATING discussion list, there is a conversation going on there at the moment concerning Intermedia, Higgins, and new media histories and methodologies. I think there's a thread somewhere on VJForums as well where we discussed Fluxus.

The best way to get the word out to a variety of makers is via NETTIME. Have a look at the JISC mailing lists for other possibilities. But be very careful with spamming these groups. Some are understandably protective about their lists.

Cool, K. I don't know if we NEED a new forum, but maybe it would inspire a bit more discussion of installation, performance etc which gets really overlooked I think. People could post details of their projects, ongoing or something? I don't know, or write ups of anything useful they've seen?

I would really welcome that. There are such diverse strands of video discussion here, staying on topic (for instance, about video art) might be a challenge at times.

But, I think the work many of us are doing outside traditional club/commercial VJ contexts should be part of our discussions here on the forums. Half my practice is video and time-based-media-oriented, but non-VJ. And half my VJ practice is outside the clubs in fine arts contexts.

Isn't the "Talk with VJs" forum good for that? "Artists" could be added on the description. And "The Future" forum description could be changed from "the combination of audio and video technologies" to "the combination of video, audio and other artforms".

Just an idea.
