hi, i found this screen, its a little larger than the ones you looked at, and the price is not that far off.

Playstation 1 Mobile monitors. They're VERY crisp, accept composite input, are 5.6", and look cool... are also very thin so they can wedge about anywhere and they're relatively cheap ($100 USD or so) and ultimately replaceable... but @ the same time rather durable (I'm on my 2nd).

something funny i found from vjo-forums:

MAKE YOUR OWN PROJECTOR
Yes, why the hell not. No it's not going to be as good as a $4000+ purpose built model from a major name brand. But It also will cost you a whole lot less. I mean alot less. I made mine for about $500 CDN dollors.

You know that sony PS1 screen I spoke of awhile ago and had made into a portable controller terminal? Well, here's a much better use for it.

If you take it apart and remove it completely from the casing and remove the backlight from the LCD, very carefully that is. You will notice that the lcd is actually very transparent and easily allows light to pass through it. Of course it was designed to do this and it colors the light very nicely too. So, I'm thinking to myself why not shine something really bright through is and use a fresnal lens or glass lens to focus it on an appropriate wall etc.

It works great! If someone has the inclination too I would be happy to supply some pictures of the whole process for others to try out.

I use a cheap overhead projector as my light source since they are very bright, the bulbs are relatively cheap and they can be had second-hand for almost nothing. They also come with a nice mirror and focusing lens built in and ready for use. The only thing you must be careful of here is that you be sure to cool the LCD properly as most projectors will make the LCD overheat.

The problem with the sony LCD is that it is only 320x200 resolution. I have an old laptop lcd around here that I could use but I am unsure of how to adapt it to accept an RGB source from the computer or even better a composite source from anything. The sony does have the advantage of having composite/svideo inputs supplied.

the PS1 thing that I mentioned supports direct input from a PS1... which I know can be quirked into S-video output and sound.... as I do not believe Playstations are truly stereo, but rather duplicated mono (I have never heard a game where it has mattered... it anyone else knows of one please let me know)... and as the Playstation connector consists of four silver bars, a gap, and another silver bar... I wonder: is this actually an S-video signal with a mono connected to it? And if so can I make it so that the PS-1 mobile monitor will accept an S-video signal... and since anything that accepts an S-video signal can also accept a composite video signal (via a $20 connector @ Radio shack)....

Insofar, we're up to:

1. One 60 Watt bulb, $.25 with an 825 lumen output and a life of 1000 hours
2. One Playstation one Mobile Monitor, with a cost of $100
3. a $20 composite to s-video adapter
4. Casing (assume $20)
5. Fan (assume $20)
6. Pane mirror (assume $10)

And you have a projector, sans focus... focus will require thinking, thinking will require sleep, and, as it's 7 am here, good night.

Teletest do a range of LCD monitors.
I use three of their 5 inch ones- Pal/ NTSC compatible. They cost me roughly ?150 each, but best feature of all they all have dual inputs, giving me six monitors in 3u's of a 19" rack.

Maplins have got a 5" b&w tv on a special offer of ?20 at the moment.

"5? b&w tv and Radio. ? Versatile design runs from mains, in-car or battery ? Built-in FM/AM radio ? Video and audio inputs - ideal for CCtv monitoring ? Plug-in mains adaptor and car lighter socket power cord included ? External aerial socket...

depends if u need quality or just a monitor. cheap and lightweight sounds good 2 me

also have a 5" B/W TV same as SlipStream. It works just fine and I have found it better than the small LCD TV I was using B4. In OZ they can be got for
AU$49 - $69. The clear plastic cover over the screen needs to be protected during transport, it scratches easily.

I have a rackmount of 4 B&W sony modular broadcast (straight out of an AV van) minimonitors, so you can disconnect them to and from the rack mount seperately :), all have sync in/out and video in/out its nice unit for a roadcase but DAMN HEAVY. Still a bargan @ $30 @ an auction.

I used to use the BW monitors from Maplin and I thought they were rubbish to put it nicely! One of them broke midway though the first gig, and they look like you they have come from a car boot sale! I have just bought 3 x 5.6 lcd monitors of ebay for ?55 each, and they will be arriving next week. I'll let you know how good they are when they turn up.

I'd highly recommend them. Dunno about the interact ones, but the genuine sony ones are at target for $120, so that's a safe bet.

that remote control looks familiar, like exactly like the koss/nextbase portable dvd player remotes. What brand is that vcd player? (I assume the remote is for the vcd?)

Hey all, just wanna ask does anyone know where id get a really small vga tft screen (cheap), i see loads of pal / ntsc ones available on the board but no real small comp monitors, (bout 5"-10") it only has to have a res of 640 x 480, but it'd make things kinda handy for my setup, rather than lugging round a 14" crt as a second monitor (no my budget doesnt really allow a second flat panel :( )

or maybe if anyone has any ideas on how to butcher a playstaion TFT to work as a vga monitor that would be "quite "cool,

cheers
