3D Software

I am in the process of forming a VDJ Company in Atlanta Georgia and have been reading just about anything i can find on the subject and following various links and such. I am interested in making my own 3d animations and was wondering what software everyone used and where i can find users that do it regularly. I looked through the forums and didnt really see this as a topic anywhere. I would really like to create the kind of stuff that was used in the liquid crystal movie. Follow link to watch the movie:

I know that 3dsmax is used to make a lot of 3d stuff but i dont really know how well it is for animation and such. Any info would be appreciated and thanks again.
