Hello,

I am looking to get people's opinions on long throw lenses. I will be trying to set up my projections for a band in small to medium clubs. After talking to the band, rear projection is never a possibility and using a standard lens will get me about 18-24 feet from the screen. This puts in the front row of a club which will NEVER work because the equipment will be right in the way of people dancing. I could hang it but many clubs do not have lighting trusses in place.

THEREFORE, the most practical application is to setup next to the soundboard in the middle of the club. This would involve using a long throw lens. I fear that brightness and clarity will be lost projecting from the distance. I know my projector has a maximum throw distance of about 48' so I will probably set up from about 45' most of the time, unless I can hang in some clubs. Please give me any feedback on people who have used long throw lenses.

Thanks!!

Avi

I imagine the size of the dance space in different clubs will vary more than the size of the stage. I'd recommend a short-throw lens on the stage more than a long-throw lens from wherever. And yes, the longer you throw it the dimmer it will be, though it's not that bad if you have a decent projector.

I kinda got stuck with a long throw lens for the Sony beamer I got a while back, and while it is a bit of a love/hate relationship with it, I am happy I have it..
It is really only to be used in med. to large venues, and as it is a proper long throw lens, it doesn't lose as much brightness as you would think, even projecting to a screen 100 feet away..````(I think that is why they make a long throw lens in the first place, to hold as much light into a focal length as possible)
