Looking for a VJ assistant for an Australian AV act who is playing at Big Chill Festival.
The date is August 7th, but you would be required for a technical rehearsal on August 6th. This is a paid job.

JOB IS FILLED. THANKING YE!

It's a very original, funny show. Sam creates most his own material which is essentially recontextualizing TV, movies and internet.
He creates beats and edits video, and has mad skillz on turntables! Many AV acts such as DJ Yoda and Hextatic have been playing his creations within their set.

You can see some of the show here:

I'll be at the AV night in Bristol on the 10th hopefully!

Edit - at a stag do on the 10th. Why do these things always clash! Meet you next time Sampology & Gary(?) ;)

Why do you say it's dead tom?

I haven't been for a few years, but always looks to be doing well...

As for DJ Yoda, does he pay for any of his footage except his intro clip, last time I saw him it was all pretty dire quality clips he seemed to have aquired from god knows where. Great DJ, but video show was very disappointing

Re: Yoda - actually his show has got a lot better in the past year. the video is much much tighter than it was and he's got some great juxtapositions / AV puns going on (Michael Jackson footage with the intro to "sweet child of mine" was my favourite bit at Camp Bestival, AV paedophile jokes at a kids festival haha) Yeah its pop culture mashup and so its never going to impress the artsy "make your own clips" brigade, but I like it and its certainly popular with punters (biggest crowd all weekend in the Big Top)

Re: The Big Chill - the Big Chill was sold to Festival Republic (formally Mean Fiddler) after last years event. They have made huge cuts to the budget and have no interest in booking VJs any more. This year there is no video at all on the main stage, a real shame given that Adam and Jim had spent years building up the video, improving it year on year.

Re: People playing other people stuff. - The AV scene has always been more open to this than VJs are. Lots of people play music videos as part of their set and playing underground remixed stuff is just an extension of this. Nobody in the audience thinks that Yoda makes all his own footage, he got one of the biggest cheers when he dropped Hyperactive by Lasse Gjertsen - youtube geekery at its best :) Anyway the point i'm making is that most people who produce AV remixes are quite happy when they get played out, it's just good to know that other people like something enough to incorporate it into their show.

this... real shame, Big Chill was one of the few festivals to actually hire in high end gear AND pay for decent visuals across all the stages.

Sampology's show went well! He is a VERY talented young man.
Good night was had by all in the Igloo, rammed out the whole time.

The dome projections were a bit sketchy, five projectors with a 4x3 image on each and a Solid Steel background/logos. No edge blending or proper geometry correction, they were patching with vvvv on the day of the show! (Why this had not been prepared in advance I don't know!) By the end of the night two projectors were on the blink and were dead by the next day, it is a very dusty site and someone had forgotten to replace the filters....

Overall impressions of the big chill from the inside:
'It ain't what it used to be'
They (CT) had installed decent projectors/screens in the dance tents and we (As Described) put VJ rigs in so if any acts turned up with VJ's they could just plug in and go. I think only one act brought someone with them.

The festival organisers realised on Thursday that they had not booked any VJ's, asking us if we can do anything upon which they were told how much it would cost. They even asked if they could have some DVD's to put on loop! .....NO!
So they got nowt from us, but there was someone on the stage crew who knocked up a couple of discs, hmm cool! same visuals on three stages at once, Ooh and some very average camera mixing from the CT guys. Stage manager on one went to the trouble of knocking out a b+w still name card for each act, brilliant!
The field manager may be familiar to some of you from Glastonbury dance arena, and gladly boasts of employing VJ's for the whole weekend for £150, well done! I shall not mention any names! (Shame on you)

No video on the main stage, bloody stoopid! Everyone loves to look at a famous dot onstage in the distance eh? CT were only told it was not to be, days before the show.

As Described also programmed visuals for the Lazyland/Enchanted Garden stage for the weekend, one part of the site which retained an essence of previous BC's. I really enjoyed my two and a half hour set on Thursday night with Adrian Sherwood, enough time to really get in the flow but not too long.
Sunday night came around and two acts I have performed with before, Appleblim and Tomb Crew were playing on the same stage so I could not let them go with just a name on the screen, think I made them look considerably better than other acts ;)

So as a VJ/tech it actually was very Chilled :)
In my opinion the festival has lost a very important ingredient, visuals were the unique selling point. I wonder if they will ever pick up the baton again.

suggest everyone posts on the big chill forum (http://forum.bigchill.net/) saying how crap the visuals were this year...

I am of course, gutted that I missed not just this, but almost the whole summer after a month long chest infection refused to get better.
being strung out on codeine and coughing yourself to sleep every night is not my idea of fun..
and I'm still not over it

Nice to actually get a report from one of the festivals Joe...cheers. At least it seems to have gone not to badly for yourself unfortunately echos from others here. Glad you all stuck to your guns and refused to supply. I just don't believe that the festival organisers realised on Thursday that they had forgotten to book VJ's. A calculated risk in the hope you guys would supply more like. Glad you didn't;)

Scratchpole

@ Gary: Don't say they were crap, (mine were amazing ;P) just ask, where were they?
@ Steve, no really. They looked at the screens once they were installed and then thought about it!

the exact same thing happened in the main dance tent 2 years ago, Adam and Jim had been trying to get a budget out of the tents organiser to program the VJs for the weekend but he said he'd take care of it. most of the weekend there was the splash screen from a budget DVD player coming out of the projectors :D

last year they coughed up and Adam designed a really nice screen install and it was used properly all weekend. guess it got Melvined.

Its a shame that a lot of the festivals are letting go of the visual side i had seperate gigs lined up last year for festivals over this summer only to be told there was no visual budget anymore.

With the birth of my new girl there was no way i was going to run around the uk for peanuts again.

It sounds like with the help of people like Joe the big chill event manged to be more than it could have been visually, and without him and others running around to support people they know and like the visuals would have been names on a loop on a standerd media player window drop.

I'm getting more bookings for club nights and indoor events these days which is a shame cause i like the festival vibe and it does enable you to spread your visual message and name further afield.

Well done Joe and all the vj's at big chill for holding up the banner for all the hard working vj's at there.

Oh and get well soon Gary, and thanks for asking to cover, roll on the 2011 festivals after the promoters relaise people deserve more than pretty paterns and names on screens. Psycho Monkey

So... the Big Hill, eh?? This festival was disappointing at best. I commented early on that it felt like i was at reading only to look at someone's program and see that the festival had been bought by festival republic.

"ahah! ... it all makes sense!!"

Very surprised in the lack of visuals, sorry, Joe, never got chance to make it over to see you VJing... i have no doubt that you guys did a great job there, im only sorry i didnt get to see to comment on it. What little i did see elsewhere (massive attack excluded) i can only hope was being done by lampies without a clue, because if it was the work of someone claiming to be a VJ then it was an embarrassment.

Thats enough of a rant, I've been struck with an inexplicable urge to go and buy a pint of Carlsberg.

Well I cannot say much more about the visuals at the Big Chill and has been said already. I would have stepped up to help out if needed but if the festival organisers thought it was better to have no visuals/just the artists name instead of paying for VJs then so be it.

Not a visual great experience when it has been for the past 6-7 years that I have been going.

But as Jim says roll on festinho in a weeks time. :)

I missed most of the few VJs there including you Joe Scratchpole I missed your work however I would have cried scab for providing visuals to the other tent on Sunday if I found you. ;)
