Looking over some recent threads and the reaction to various info I think one of the problems we are dealing with is that we are looking in the wrong community for fans.. we're looking towards those which attend the music events. More importantly what I think we should look @ is experimental film festivals, who, quite fankly, would probably get a kick out of VJs.

In my former life I was a film critic (by former life I mean a few years ago), and still have a remarkable number of contacts, i.e. a friend of mine that programs 30 minutes a week on the big screen in Times Square (one of her major problems was the lack of audio... hint hint).

Off the top of my head, film festivals that might be interested in an experimantal video-to-music performance would be:

Ann Arbor Film Festival (Michigan)
No Dance Film Digital and Mulitmedia Festival (Park City, same week as Sundance)
Othercinema, in San Francsisco
the Film Forum, in New York City
the Cinematheque, in Cleveland

Anyone think this is worth pursuing?

There have been VJ performances @ the 2 last Melbourne international film festivals, unfortunately I haven't been able to make it to either of them but reports have been very good

BTW,

I've been accepted to ISEA 2002
which is taking place in Nagoya Japan, in October

(this through unXposed)

So I was wondering if any one
could send me some info about cool clubs to go to
that have good reputation for VJ culture, either in
Tokyo or Nagoya...

Or any good VJs to look out for?

while i'm there, might as well try and
see what's out there...

Thanks,

VJ NE1

Two things,
In Tokyo look up Spyd. He goes under the name Tokyo X-ray.
He has released three VJ DVD compilations. Years ago he did some work with us at Dimension 7.
He is a 6ft + Israeli with crazy hair and piercing.
He plays out a lot so I am sure he will know the good spots.
Also checkout WarHead.

On the film festival note.
I agree, this is where we should be turning. However, I know a lot of film festival people that seem to think VJ's are at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes the film world.
I say lets show them something different.
It might be old school vs. new school or just simply it's too experimental for them.
I don't know, I have seen a lot of crap at experimental film festivals. I couldn't possible see why they wouldn't be into it.
If for anything else than the opening or closing party.

Yeah i know the feeling regarding experimental film festivals... one in seeing a ton of crap, two in their resistance to this... mainly it's the film vs. video argument.

An update:

Talked to my friend who books Times Square... she's VERY interested but sadly that's going under (not Times Square, just her little weekly half hour).

Don't you hate living in the arts community when the economy's bottom is cut open and the liquidity falls through.

hey, vjculture!
Glad to see you here in our little community!
Your show @ psychic chakra was inspiring. My beamer has never projected such mayhem.

(before I devolve another thread into O.T. ramblings)

Do any of you know of an online resource that provides a comprehensive list of film festivals in a given area?

FilmThreat.com might have one, if not Chris Gore turns out an annual guide to them.

You're in Wisconsin... right? I think the nearest really large film fest you have is the Ann Arbor Film Festival, in Michigan each March... but this festival is very Film-centric.... they only two years ago did an experimental pixelvision/video room...

Not sure what all they've got locally to you. Experimental film festivals are one potential aspect... larger, corpoarate-style film festivals a la South by Southwest (who showcased the Q-Bert film, WAVE TWISTERS), but that's in texas... the best bet you'd have would be to meet local filmmakers, as Chris Gore's guide is notoriosuly incomplete (mainly because watching the fest circuit is a full-blown job... trust me I know I used to do it for a living).

It's fun.... perhaps the most fun (fun defined as alcohol in this case) festival I've ever been to.

VJ culture,

thanks for the japanese linkup people
i'll try and follow those leads...

BTW,

I think the mains difference between
film makers and VJs
and this is where they give us a hard time,
is that film makers focus more on content
and we focus more on style
(some may disagree)

From an outsider's point of view,
VJs are somewhere between genres,
between art intallation and cinema
so from either of the mentionned stances
I mean if we are jugde by these criterias (art or cinema)
we will always appear weak...

in an ideal world
we should just stick with VJ things.
maybe in the near future...
