some vj's and film makers like to show optical-based effects in their work, referencing real life - rather than making up any particular effect or animation without an optic basis.
perhaps this may be of interest - although the findings relate to a couple of bird species.
the Robin uses a substance called Chryptochrome in the right eye to increase and decrease the sensitivity of the retina surface, in response to magnetic fields,
with the effect of light and dark areas being apparent in the bird's vision.
this is how they fly true north.
whereas the Pigeon has an amount of Magnetite crystals in the beak, responding to magnetic fields with either pressure or perhaps olfactory response, i guess.

more info on Chryptochrome
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptochrome
although i should mention the page contains phrases like:
"Novel features of chryptochrome-mediated photoreception in the brain circadian clock of Drosphila."

I red this and first thought robin was a guy putting this Chryptochrome stuff into his right eye, so he could see magnetic field... WHAT a freak I thought to myself. But when he started to fly.. well..
