in the dark night of the soul that was 5am the outher night, i was thinking why should we think V.J.'ing is as important as D.J.'ing or should be elervated to that status, mony, fame, etc.
yes it's true we spend hours on pre-gig work, genraley we have to serplie more equipment etc
but can people dance to visuals? vj.net gig being a case in point, without the music or the D.J. we are fish out of warter.

hahahaha info.
Well unj I don't think that just because we need music to mix to we can't be equal with the guy thats putting the records on mate.
Checked out Kriel's site, yeah some of those press comments are great, I really should scrounge through my press clipping for some similar quotes...... never really seen any of his work so I can't comment on how good it is but he definately seems to have been in the right place @ the right time with the right attitude. Good luck to him...... looking forward to a UK Vs Aust VJ world cup match up :p

FISH OUT OF WATER
I think what most (and I say most, not all) of us do relies on has to do with a beat, the crowd that we gig with like the fucked up clip/clips/story we put together. My personal opinion is, without the DJ/Act, we are only an "arty farty" group interested in showing videos of our work. We would need to have serious storyline or theme to go to, to accept full recognition.

Of course, the same could be said of DJ's that don't play horribly "danceable" music.
I doubt if Oakenfold would draw in a massive crowd playing experimental sound collage any more than we would draw in a crowd just doing video collage. The advantage we have over musicians that want to do experimental work is that they can get the audience there and then we can play with the audience they've provided. You'll notice that often music videos are more "challenging" then the music they accompany. In the same way, we can play with the captive audience idea to experiment.
If you want to be the star of the show based on purely visual content, then just make a film.
The model I'm aiming at might be closest to a jazz musician. You play some new work, exploring new areas, reinterpret old work, and sometimes just do an outright standard. It isn't necessarily as arty as something a performance artist might do, and it isn't popular as pop music; but it is creative, innovative, reverential, and fun. I'd be happy to just make rent and expenses if I could work interesting gigs most of the time.
