On the AV front, I've been experimenting with solo DJ/VJ sets lately, and I wanna find out who else here is doing the same. At the moment, I'm keeping it fairly straightforward, working in the DJ/VJ model (rather than performing original tunes).

What I'm wondering is what kind of DJ setup any of y'all who are doing the same thing might be using. The decks thing would be more time efficient in production (I wouldn't have to transfer my back catalogue to MP3), but less so when trying to mix visuals in the club as well, so I've gone laptop.

I've tried Mixmeister 5, but didn't like it much (nor did I really understand it from a cursory look). Now I'm using Traktor 2.0 on a PowerBook, with an Evolution UC-33 MIDI'ed to the PowerBook for control, and a Korg Kaoss Pad.

Is anyone using anything they think would work better? Any solo DJ/VJs out there?

i'm expermenting at the mo with a laptopsize-yamaha dx200 groovebox and an Edirol PCR30 keyboardcontroller controlling one laptop with ableton and one with resolume.

The fun stuff with the dx200 is that u got 16 knob controllers besides an one octave button keyboard and an onboard sequencer, which all can be used to trigger visuals via midi too.
coolest feature i discovered yet is the freeg function which is in fact a four track sequencer for recording and looping controller movements, not bad for 170 Euro-bucks, i guess....

downside is u need a well thought concept and some of the
little philrees midiboxes to get the midistreams going... to all of the units (ableton, edirol, dx200, resolume)
