whats going on with the chatroom?
the new chatroom sux biscuits
it truncates my name to wellREDma
there are no coloured options so following chat with more than 3 ppl will be hard,
and it seems to be putting ppl off, cos i never see anybody in there
I know there was the arse of having to refresh the old one occasionally, but even with that its till preferable to this new one

I am glad it's irc based now because I hated the php chat thingy

mm millions have used irc with everything in the same color ...
i really dont think that is a problem for most, actually the colors was one of the things that disgusted me on the old chat.
9 characters is the current limit of the irc server, I can ask the person who set it up for us if there is an option to allow longer names.
i coded this irc client and had someone install the irc server because after the blackout the php chat couldnt seem to be fixed ... so i bodged this together so we can at least chat at all
if you arent happy with the way your nick is truncated, you can
always do /nick wellRED or similar
the chat is far from finished but bear with us
zap25 you should be able to use a BNC (the other kind) to connect on a different port so that you will able to bypass that firewall , ive used this trick to chat at work before ... I'll look up how to do it if I get a chance ( just back from croatia , gigging in Docklands (amsterdam) this weekend )
and i think the main reason why not many ppl are in there is that you can't tell if its empty or not from the outside, once we get some bots that talk php we'll fix this too
I really think a proper IRC based chat is much more stable and versatile than the old PHP chat, but its all early stages so bound to have some issues ... be patient grass hopper

zap, and others behind a firewall ( I assume most ppl at work behind firewalls are running pc ) try this little app:
http://www.antifirewall.com/
it promises to bypass the firewall in irc and other things .. you will need to modify your mirc setup for it to work.

yea... promises promises...
oh well... it was about time I got a broadband link at home.
Too bad there ain't no phoneline in our appartment complex. So ADSL is a nono.
Too bad the cablemodem is already in use by some other tenant.
So I have two options: WiFi or talking to the guys who are using the cablemodem. I think I'll try the latter first.

Dont meen to be rude. I know how much work all of this takes and the VJC crew does a great job,
but the new chat sucks. Think its silly that you have to install all sorts of Fire wall blockers to get chat to work. This does not make it very easy for ever one to use. The Chat was one of the most important parts to VJC and now it seems lost, at least to most. With out it VJC has no area to hold real time talks. The diff. color function is also a must to tell people apart in a fast chat. Again I dont want to seem picky but I think this matter need some fast attention, which it is not getting. Fire walls are some thing that allot of computers need to have on at all times and to force people to install programs that disable these functions is counter productive to an open forum ment to be for EVERY ONE TO USE with ease.
Thank you.

erm I'd say 99 % of people don't need to install firewall blockers to install this chat. If you run your own firewall you can easily allow access on port 6667, if you wanna chat. There is no point in blocking every port if you want to enjoy the internet. If your boss runs a firewall to stop you from chatting in work time, well tough luck.
I only made this solution because the old chat was still broken after the server crash and i wanted to provide an alternative. The client I quickly hacked together in shockwave for this is not something you have to use. You can use a variety of dedicated IRC clients, even JAVA applets can be possible.
Feel free to ressurect the old php chat .. i didnt know how to and others didnt either...

I know the situation you are in with this chat thing, your are right it prob. is a better system it is just driving me crazy. I just feel like smashing my computer when things dont work....I am a hardware nut and if I could have a peice of gear for every app. I would have rooms of them. Umm oh well, thanks for the reply I'll try another port....just didnt seem to work when I tryed last. May be beacause I am located in the states and my fire wall may be blocking me out beacause the server is over sea's??? Not sure if that can cause problems. I know one Robot can not fix all of the worlds problems, and save the world all in one day

it should work across the planet. if you run a firewall, go to its settings and open up port 6667 and it should work.
