View Full Version : would you pay to play?

easy all
So are people/vj's prepared to pay for there loops now?
I only ask cos a while back i posted the same question and most replies were along the lines of no-it was deemed better to set up working relationships with animators and to collaborate.
as this whole medium grows it seems to me that the different divisions within the performance process are becoming more clearly defined. That is to say vj's are concentrating on enhancing their playing/mixing skills and others on creating the loops and samples.(like me :) )
a couple of questions then:
1. as a vj do you like to create/find all or most of your samples
2. do you think the possibility of having tailor made loops for yourself is a good idea
3. and would you be prepared to pay for this?
I know there are a few resources out there like audiovisualizers, but from what I've read here they aint the best? to much fractal and kalidoscopic stuff.
sorry if this is a bit too much like a market research questionnaire ;) but any thoughts would be much appreciated.

>1. as a vj do you like to create/find all or most of your samples.
I use both custom created stuff and sampled/found footage.
>2. do you think the possibility of having tailor made loops for yourself is a good idea.
Yeah that would be nice if someone could pluck the images straight from my head and make them into loops for me.
>3. and would you be prepared to pay for this?
Maybe if you inverted a mechanism that can record my mental images yes, otherwise...pffft. I won't pay someone for loops... EVA.
Personally I am a VJ that focuses on live performance and mixing when I'm @ the gig and making interesting loops and material that is going to work while @ home..... I enjoy doing both and I think they can both stimulate ideas in the other field, to totally disconnect them would be like cutting an arm (or a testicle :p) off....

> 1. as a vj do you like to create/find all or most of your samples
I love to dig into old / weird video tapes to find samples, don't know if it would be considered as 'creation' though :p Sampling can be long but I like it when I have captured 100 new loops and I'm ready to test them. I become all excited :)
> 2. do you think the possibility of having tailor made loops for yourself is a good idea
I don't think that someone who doesn't know me would be able to do loops that fits for me. I mix on a band and one of the member often brings me loops and they are great but I don't think it'd be the same if we didn't know each other.
> 3. and would you be prepared to pay for this?
I think this question is largely tied with how much money VJs are making. The large majority of VJs are underpaid and so I don't think they would be ready to give all the few money they make to someone else. Most VJs are lucky if what they earn can be used to buy new hardware... and I assume tailor made loops would be quite expensive too.

As a new VJ who needs to pad his loops collection, I'd say yes I'd be willing to pay for some loop CDs. This is mainly because at the moment I have no CDs to trade with other VJs and my own attempts at creating loops are still quite amateur.
However, I don't think I'd want to have custom loops made...but I would buy a theme loop cd (ie theme 'flight', theme 'physics') for about 20 bucks.

rekon it's a jugel between what we would like and what we can do ?

Unj..... I see your point, and having VJed for around 5 years I had forgotten what it was like to be just starting out with VERY little content, but stick with making your own loops, you won't get far over that "ameteur" style unless you work @ it and work hard.
As for using loop CDs the only problem is that as a newbie one of the best things to do to set yourself apart from the crowd is to use different material from everyone else, otherwise your just a new face playing the same shit...... not really something that will get ppl talking about you or your work.

1. as a vj do you like to create/find all or most of your samples
as a vj i like to use the freshest and best material i can get my hands on, whether it be ripped or selfmade. Normally its 1/3 ripped 1/3 ripped then totally reshaped and 1/3 selfmade.
2. do you think the possibility of having tailor made loops for yourself is a good idea
Unrealistic due to price. BUT I would buy loops CD if they were good enough. Currently there is none that I have found.(please point me to some if you know of any)
3. and would you be prepared to pay for this?
sure if the quality was right and I knew they were limited in numbers so that not everyone was using tham...kinda like a white label record or dub plate i guess...
as it happens we are hoping to create such a series of 10 loop CDs over the next year...royalty free BUT limited to between 25 and 50 of each CD worldwide. (and not forsale in newzealand where we reside)
we are still researching the ideas between day jobs but there is a questionaire form at
http://www.assid.co.nz/warptv/feedback02.html
some of the info is now wrong due to the feedback we have had already but you'll get the idea.

I just spent half my (small) budget for a gig to have a friend make me some 3d character animations of a dragonfly to go with the theme of the event. I worked on capturing footage, and making loops, then used his dragonfly character throughout the evening to bind things together. I can do a little 3d, but he's been doing it for years on a professional level. It worked out great, and I can't think of a better situation then paying your friends and other artists for original content that fits the theme of a show. The question is; how often can I afford to spend half my budget on something like that, and how many of my friends would be offended at would I would have to offer them for their time>
I think the reason we create a lot of our own content is that we don't have money to spend, just as much time as caffeine can provide us with.
This is not to say I don't like to create my own content, I just know a painter is a better painter than I am, a 3d artist is a better 3d artist than I am, and I'm a better visuals artist then they are. Collaboration is the best way for us all to focus on what we do best.

Collaberation with friends can be great, but really a lot of low end 3d packages can be learnt in a weekend if you already know the basics.....
I'm just saying most of what you will find other ppl generating is not that much more amazingly better than what you can do yourself with a little time and effort :)

I personallly like to create everything I dont like using other peoples stuff coz it aint ma own... i hate sampling others work. be creative and do it all your self i say.
2. do you think the possibility of having tailor made loops for yourself is a good idea
no... thats cheating.. being a creative and all it would take all the fun out of it. wouldn't it??
3. and would you be prepared to pay for this
fark no... i'd rather put ma head up a dead rhino's asshole. :)
im all about self made content.. i know other might like it, but i wouldnt.

I've spent hours trawling the electric internet looking at clips, and I've downloaded two! (well actually 50ish but I dumped the rest). I wrote to the authors and got their blessing - out of common courtesy - as I only use flash, I can easily create my own stuff and I have 20 yrs as an artist/art teacher to draw from. But the two clips I got were so good I'd have happily payed for them. (up to a point!).

Hehehe...... yeah I have been playing a bit with a few of the flash mixers that are around and am thinking of maybe doing an all vector flash mix set @ a gig coming up... something suitably angular, maybe a DnB night.

yeah do it - once its been thru a scannie, its quite organic by comparrison to the squeeky clean look it has on the monitor. I've made about 150 clips, and with all the little goodies in flashmixer, one conclusion I come to is that no set is ever the same - even if I wanted it to be! (without using notes etc).

Yeah same, but I have about 1500 clips in my DB these days, 4 layers x (X) FX per layer x 2 sources plus mixer FX x unlimited possiblities of the CVI... pretty hard to do anything the same EVER!!! :)

Well I have been in the game for 5 years, so I have a LOT of clips, not so say I don't have my favs that you will see almost every show, but they are mixed in different ways, with different stuff everytime...... thats just 2 laptops (or 1 laptop and 1 premix VCD) running SVi (all players/layers and FX), 1 MX1 and a CVI.... nothing that special :D

1. as a vj do you like to create/find all or most of your samples
yes, but have a large co-operative of artists, video activists and mates sourcing stuff as well as making/stealing clips from movies/tv etc
2. do you think the possibility of having tailor made loops for yourself is a good idea
not really...unless they are just for our co-operative or a particularly powerful clip....we'll all look the same then wont we?
3. and would you be prepared to pay for this?
yes if it was the dogs bollox, had good socio-politico effect and was timeless

Nice to hear about video activists, there used to be a big thread about this on VJForums but it got deleted with the message board crash

The only time I would find myself paying for content is where I could spend days on end downloading clip after clip and sifting through / converting / etc, or just pay a few dollars and buy 700mb of content that I can look through and pick what I want out. I really enjoy making my own stuff (computer made flash animations with my own text, custom stuff for parties maybe DJ names, or random camcorder footage of local stuff from around the city) but I can't fill an entire show with my own content, the meat is all found online.
