They come up on ebay quite often usually for around half price.
New you're talking about ?300, but take into consideration these thing last for years (30 plus)
Theres very little maintenance, lamps are cheap (?2.50) and all parts for what there are, are user freindly and readily available.
Whish everything was made like them.

Just realised I have one of these at home. Has anyone made their own effects wheel? How did you do it.

best results if you have a blank six inch wheel, even purchase one from opti, or modify an existing one (some are not painted but are two pieces of glass/plastic with a piece of printed film in between.
?35 for the wheel, print onto transparancies from your computer new discs every night!

useing this technique you could allways bodge together a optinetic out of a old slide projector, the disc (as above) and a small moter atached to the disk in front of the projector works just the same

Rank Tudor slide projectors are the best for this since they allow you to put the disk between the external and internal lens plus they also have a 12v power socket on the back so no messing about having to run another power source.

ristuuk, like a complete dummy I got my own email address wrong! I've edited it to the correct version (see above) if you want to sell on some opti gear.

Nice to see some people interested in visuals that don't involve a pc/mac. Some of the best lightshows I've seen were traditional opti based projections.

Something to point out, when mixing with opti's/slides/35mm i used to layer with three or four machines on to each screen (proper live mixing! straight on the screen) you also get the bonus of each source/layer having its own lumens.Always had very bright screens and very little problems with smoke machines.
Down side with the 16mm's ,people always wanted to know how the records stayed on the big wheels!

i managed to convince my local glass merchant to make thin circular glass that was rippled to use with the solar 250. got a great sea side effect for peanuts - till i broke teh glass - doh
also - just painting onto acetate in china ink (under teh influence of course) creates another level of madness.
in fact im going to do some this w/e thanks for the reminder:jump2:
ps. optikinetics are very helpful and will accept new designs if they are good enough
