why are html tags not allowed in messages?
i've been trying to post some ascii pinout diagrams - i can't use the <pre> tag and if i just type them in the message box then it ignores the spaces

HTML is usually not allowed for security issues. What are the <pre> tags for already? I think you can do almost everything using the vB code?

<pre> is preformatterd text - its allows you to insert text that has odd spacing (ie ascii art / diagrams) i don't think theres a vB cod e equivelent
is there a full listing of vB code tags anywhere?

Yes there's, click on the # above the text box or type {code}{/code} (with [] instead of {}) :)
This is
a GREAT
example
You can also use the Courier font (click on the FONT dropbox above the textbox)

There is a full listing of BB code here (http://www.vjforums.com/misc.php?action=bbcode).
