I'd recommend joining BECTU - you get public liability as part of the package, sole traders don't need employers liability (you don't employ anyone). Being part of a union has other benefits too such as access to legal advice and support should you find yourself in a difficult position.

DJGuard have failed to pay out claims to several people, i'd be wary of them.

Yeah the wording of DJguard's policy concerned me when i was looking through it. seems they've left themselves quite a number of avenues to avoid paying claims in certain situations.

yeah but... last time I checked it cost 8% or your income to be a member.. which makes sense if you are on a salary.. I doubt many VJs will benefit.

I'm with them too- have had several claims answered more or less succesfully.
make sure that you only insure your computer with them if it's under 4 years old (http://vjforums.com/showthread.php?t=24023)

Public Liability Insurance and Employers Liability Insurance
are two different things.

Public Liability Insurance covers your business when it comes into contact with clients or members of the public. But, Employers Liability Insurance
covers you if you have employees working for you, you are legally obliged to have employers’ liability insurance.

I suggest, you seek professional advice. Recently I bought a Employers Liability Insurance policy from http://www.constructaquote.com/liability-insurance/employer.aspx and am quite happy about their price and services.

Its worth checking with them.

If you need any more info, feel free to contact me.

Thanks.

Most VJs don't have employees - freelancers working for you on an occasional basis are not employees.

But then you probably know that given you work for an insurance company?

ha - JLT/photoguard finally agreed to pay up.
but the cheque they sent never arrived...
what a surprise.
an even bigger surprise was the sudden rise in the excess from 250 to 500.
