View Full Version : wierdest event you've done visuals at

our strangest event we've done stuff for is:

a pagan ceremony, on the summer soltice last saturday.
quite bizzare. on the invite it says: Frolics, Fireworks, Sacrifices.
very strange, especially when the pagans in question called for the blessing of the water spirits and it started to rain :)

what's your wierdest event to date?

Also the first one I ever did in '93 could qualify. In Berlin, (Traenerpalast, the building next to checkpoint charlie where you had to exhange your money when traveling east<>west)
just starting to experience a microdot for the first time and the promoter asks me if i brought those tapes and introduces me to a 2 deck, 1 cam setup and asks me if I could vj for him.
There were some sound systems from holland and a lot of spiral tribe bunch hung out there. Lot of fun discovering feedback for the first time, ppl started yelling when i did it as well, mad reactions. Maddest point was where I realized I had been listening to more or less the same beat for a few hours now, and saw that the public had taken turns in adjusting either a 909, 808 or one of several 303's. After a few minutes they would all shift one machine to the right, allowing one new person to enter and having one going back to dancing again. The most democratic gig I ever witnessed.

Come to think of it, that was pretty normal compared to last saturday.

Mine was just a gay party where I had to project Ken over Ken pictures and then another Ken came in and there war a 3 Ken on each other. The promoter of the party gave me the pictures he took, about 40, then Smurf, etc...

But I like the 303 stuff better.

did a buddhist gig recently which was very strange - no smoking and no drinking and a lot of spiritual dancing, chanting and sitting on the floor. kind of stuff that you see at festivals all the time - but it felt very strange and quite wrong in a club in the middle of a city. -

the worst thing was knowing that all the hippys were stone cold sober - and there disturbing wierd behaviour that you would normaly put down to too much acid was in actuall fact fully intentional!!

my weirdest definitely has to be doing the wrap party in the first Big Brother house for season one,
we were set up in the camera runs , so our rig was behind one of the big one way mirrors, so we could see the punters but they couldnt see us which was strange to say the least ,
we had cameras set up in the diary room which we were mixing off, so everyone knew the cameras where there, but that didnt seem to inhibit anyone from going in there to indulge in various narcotic and sexual hi-jinks , even though we were plastering it all over the screens in the main room !!

in '93 i did a residency at this thing which was a multi-club within a club (if it was in the suburbs instead of the heart of the city it might have seemed really gross, but it kinda worked) there was a main house-inspired room, an s&m dungeon in these catacomb like hidden passageways [super old theatre], a suave acid-jazz room(djs jazz musicians and mc's), a slamming underground funk place (just dj), a glam punk band playing in the basement, and a vip space for dragqueens and other assorted peoples (i had projectors and monitor scuptures around the entire place, sopmething like 60,000 sqft and could get the sound from any room i chose to mix ((sadly the images would be the same in every space)))

the opening night was the wierdest though. they flew in Boy George, who did all of his old cluture club hits and then he dj'd... had 2 cams on him 1 for the crowd, 1 betacamSP (for realtime scratching) 6 VHS (!) with 2.5" monitors and a PC. the club hired about 50 kids to dance in their underwear and make out in couches placed above the bars. (the patrons didn't know they were paid and by 3am there were about 1000 people in their skivvies)... oh, and the promoter would give me these tapes like the xxx version of snow white to scratch with (worked great w/ keying-- taste aside) and i'll never forget the Boy singing do you really wanna hurt me while he was singing on screen mixed with all these dwarves shuking their clothes and diving onto snow white. weird.

I did a few gigs in a club where the music just went "thump-thump-thump-thump........" I looked around for a band but there was none. Some guy was playing records.

The actual place itself was weird, dark, except for loads of flashing lights. The people arrived after I setup. I think some of them were on drugs, because they didnt stop dancing all night.

Bloody weird. Never gonna do it again.

the weirdest/worst we ever did was coming to a big hall where an IT fare was held, corporate gig. When we arrived Belgian cult weirdo Eddy Wally was playing (i.e. playbacking) with several gogo girls. We set up our gear, thinking we would be playing with a dj afterwards, and waited for his gig to end. He stopped, and they told us we could start because Bonny M was up next?
We had a great laugh, vj'ing with Bonny M playbacking and afterwards, the worst dj ever encountered?
got good pay though?

(a slideshow of scanned photographs of a friends live, projected at a wall in the 'waiting'room)
a very strange but somehow satisfying thing to do

in fact we did things at 2 funerals, but don't wanna make a habbit of it.

I followed this thread since it started but never had the nerve to mention this 'events', but also like to share this experiance

You could only get there by boat. 4 floors lined with couches steamin' with the most extreme decadence I've seen, ever, ever, ever. Nice.

Kriel,

How was this fort party in Russia promoted? How did the "punters" know about it?

Was there an even balance of men and women at this event?

Are the promotors still active? Are they respected? Was this event deemed successful, or out of control?

Please help out a Canadian blinded by conservative North American media.

Best,
Marcus <Portal>

It's called Fortdance, happens outside of St. Petersburg, and this was the second year they've done it. It's the biggest outdoor dance event in Russia -- about 35,000 people -- and is run by Zeppelin club in Moscow.

http://www.fortdance.com

And I understand what you're saying North American media conservatism (although I don't think the individuals are anywhere near as conservative as the media and the politicians). That's part of the reason I moved from Atlanta to Europe 10 years ago...

Weirdest gig?
Probably last saturday psytrance party in a 300 year old catholic ex-convent/church...about 400 people dancin away in the church atrium as main danceloor...dj placed right on the altar...my images projected where the crucifix would be placed above the altar...IMO one of my best shows/perfomances up to date...great mystical/magical vibe throught out the place, good music and punters.

AVN awards show.

While mixing content this little midget porn star comes up. Where's my dressing room? All yelling at me. I calmly told her to go over there and ask the production people standing backstage.

Ugh. But they gave me a nice hotel room!! Soaking in a jacuzzi before a gig is tops!

but,
a) "little" midget.... what other types are there? are there giant midgets? can a midget be like, 6 feet tall? and even more importantly;
b) "midget porn star" now i admit that i am not up on the latest porn thing... i know that porn stars have melded with street culture and rock and all that... and now porn stars have become as big as tatooed whiny boys with distortion pedals, but still i gotta ask; are there really midget porn stars??? that sounds weirder than anything i've seen here yet. how do they become more popular than regular porn midgets? do they win awards? do people stop them on the street and ask for their autographs? this just sounds weird to me.....

ceilings about 6ft high! carting kit about down narrow 'submarine-style' corridors, down steps at 80 degree angles! terrible acoustics for the music... and a live satellite link up had to be rigged at the top of the crows nest!

I've done a lot of visuals in support of theatre shows, some are really warped. (though fun, I tend to create the visuals and let someone else run them as shows can last quite a few nights). Also I've made and run visuals for Christian events, which is also very different.

i guess this one falls into the weirdest events category.. a few weeks ago i had a gig here called Raw Power. it was an evening of speaking, by these raw-food new age guru-y guys. well before he went on, had a nice set with my old VJ partner, and then the guy starts talking and i start mixing 2 cams (one with great feedback) they wanted minimal imagery while he was talking so it was a more of a live edit than a mix, but cutting on his rhythm and by what he was saying (which was 50-50, some cool , some "dang man, eat some cooked food!")
the crowd was pretty impresive though, all yoginis and beautiful healthy people abound (me out behind the building puffing my doob before the set).... the visuals were really appreciated (sure most people in the audience had done psychadelics at some point in their lives, Not that you need to to appreciate VJing)
the food was pretty good too, livefood pizza and the like... funny though they had a tonn of these fruits that cost like $50 each, spiked like a blowfish and stink like 10,000 barfoot guys with chronic althleets foot all stckingtheir feet in your face.... or worse. the whole room stank (350 people?) thing tasted so damn yummy though
:yep: you gotta say that is a weird gig

Havent doneany weird gigs... does that make me an ouctcast :scared:

closest i came to weird was a gig in an unused airplane hanger in Bombay, It was the rainy season... sludge everywhere.. soundcheck was done earlier in the day.. at night guess what

Hangar doors close, 3000 people inside first sound of "darude sandstorm" starts and One shit fu***in load of mosquitos get dislodged from their habitat and start attacking! you shoulda seen it... Im serious!

oh yeah then there was this guy that kept coming back asking ifI could play his dvd instead of mine.... Dvd?? dvd??
is that what my fuckin hard work looked like? :grrr:

Should I know the answer to this? When I was in the US a lot of things are censored, but here in Spain I don't think that word exists. After midnight all these local channels turn to porn stations running porn movies of all types. Then they run a little banner at the bottom trying to hook people into the hotlines. Bizarre but slightly entertaining. Just the other day a porn film dubbed Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was aired. I'm not joking. I will leave the rest to your imagination.

I work along side DJ Pascal Kleiman who spins with his feet because he doesn't have arms. Some people call that weird. Since I have known him for about 4 years I don't look at that as weird anymore. I admit when I first met him I thought it was a little weird but I quickly forgot about that and accepted him for the person and talented dj that he is.

In Agen, France we did an event that was funded by the L'APF. Check the webpage and you can figure out how weird it was. A musical event with rap, rock, two step polka, and GOA/PSY Trance.

I just did a High School Homecoming dance. Full on "Rave" visuals. Pretty funny (my DJ friend asked me to do it, as he was renting them the sound system).

They had an open WiFi network throughout the school. Wish schools were that cool when I went (of course, back then a 386 or an Apple IIgs was "high tech").
