And your point is?

were they mixing with thevisualisations? or just leaving it running ?

before you start judging, some promoters LIKE visualisations, they think that that is appropriate for their night, so if that was what the guy was booked to do then fair enuff

it appeard to just be running, unless they were mixing between 2 macs, or had videotaped it and were mixing between them...
I dont think i need to explain what my point is here...

there are so many people who have got something to say or some creative flair, why is it the ones with none seem to be running the show???

well fair enough it was just one night, I hadn't expected any visuals at all, so it may have been a last minute thing. And maybe they just couldnt find a anyone willing to do the night. But it does irritate me and I am surprised it doesnt irritate you guys, I'm not a VJ as such, and am not attempting to say I am, but when there are people bringing down the name JV to the lowest possible denomination. I would expect the people who do take it seriously, and are trying to push the medium foreward to care in some way...

why allow a promoter to dictate your art form?

because he's paying you?

there are words for that...

pardon me for giving a shit :(

The point I was making, when I asked what your point was, was that you can go into clubs up and down the country every night and see shit like this. In my book, using iTunes stuff is no more or less brainless than slowed down "Estenders" or "Rainbow" or whatever. If ever there was a medium purpose made for encouraging true originality, then visuals in clubs is it. So, why is it saturated with derivative stuff that anybody with a laptop could do? As Red says, some promoters will like it! All we can do is try and educate those that need it/are open to it.

"there are so many people who have got something to say or some creative flair, why is it the ones with none seem to be running the show???" - bit of an over generalisation there pal! You're going to the wrong clubs!

Was someone calling themselves a VJ at this night?

If so, I would be more inclined to laugh rather than get angry.

If not, what is the problem? Surely a promotor can put whatever projections they like in their club.

Some clubs don't have DJs who can mix tunes - they just have a guy who changes the CD. One place I worked doing lighting had pre-burnt CD of the tunes that were allowed to be played on Friday nights. The guy who changed the tracks did it because he got some free drinks and the girls loved him. He didn't care about music in the slightest.

I personally would not pay to go to such a place, and that is my right.

However, I wouldn't start trying to claim that the promotor was doing something evil by choosing a less creative option. That is his/her right.

By all means, have a chat with promotors like this and see if they are aware of what can be done with visuals when someone is in control (that includes visualisations as well as other stuff) but what's the point in getting angry with them?

As for giving a shit...

Do you think that DJs that are pushing the boundaries get angry when some lamer who switches tracks on a CD calls themselves DJ Whatever?

Does any truly talented artist get angry with those who are less committed than them for labeling themselves as an artist?

Of course not - they know that there is no comparison and are comfortable enough with their own identity not to get all het up about what someone else is up to.

Dan.

yea ok
I am over geneeralising and being over sensetive, but why should I be consistantly disappointed by this sort of thing?
DJ's DO piss me off too, but I am not a musician, so it doesn't stick out so obviously to me, I am interested in the visual world...
I wouldn't mind if someone had made an effort and it was bad, at least they're trying, but when there's clearly no thought, I fiind it frustrating, especially when I'm as drunk as I was then...
a good night was had by all, and I'm sure the promoter was patting himself on the back about how much cash he'd raked in

ah well, I guess I should lighten up, and try some better drugs than alcahol

hhmmmn

brighton eh? where was this?

it doesnt surprise me really considering promoters in this town can get vjs to make stings, bring kit, set up kit, mix show, break down kit and go home being paid less than half of what it would cost to hire a beamer from a proper AV place.

i think if i was getting 30 quid for a nights visuals id be tempted to stick itunes on and piss off to the bar

(except i wouldnt cos mixings much more fun than trying to talk to munters over the sound of a dodgy PA)

promoters are scum they do not care about the quality of the visuals , only the price, and if they can get some spotty oik with
itunes for a fiver less than some other spotty oik with resolume then thats what theyll do,

lol @ the thought of bottomfeeders being bottomfed off

brighton is a cool and happening place, sorry my bile breifly ran over there
normal sevice has been resumed

brighton probably has more vjs per inch than anywhere else
and added in the fact that in any town where the main(only?) export is entertainment the club scene is bound to be a lot more political/competetive/corrupt than a normal town of its size.

btw for those not of a british persuasion Brighton is a tiny little seaside town, where all the media/arty/pretentious Londoners go to (own) party at weekends,
which also happens to be the gay capital of britain by a factor of about 5, and a major stoppoff on the ozzy/kiwi hippy trail .

oh and holly, for oik read punk in the pre 1976 American usage
