i have a VOB file on my hard drive, and i want to make it into an AVI, MOV, or anything really. i have tried more programs than i can list here, to do a basic conversion from VOB to uncompressed AVI, which i can then compress in cleaner 5.
not one of the packages that i have tried so far will do it right. some extract the video - but not the audio, some vice-versa, some crash my machine when extracting, some crash my machine when i bring them into cleaner and others wont extract the VOB file unless it is actually on a DVD (not on my HDD). the point being that nothing has worked 100% so far.
does anybody know a reliable piece of software for this purpose?

.vob
as in "vob" is the file extension.
its a file format for DVD to my understanding.

Oh... *puts a DVD on his player and check the extension* I have VOB, IFO and BUP (!) files here. :) Actually I think it's a little more complicated than this, there is a load of protections to DVDs. I can't give any recommendation but I found that http://dvd.box.sk has a huge list of DVD rippers so maybe you can find a converter there.

DeCSS... if DVD2AVI doesn't use it. DeCSS strips the encoding.
Try http://dvd.box.sk/ and run a search. You'll find it.

unfortunately, these are all packages that i have tried already, with no success...
not to worry, i have found a work around through cleaner, quicktime pro, Premiere & DVD2AVI that is almost giving me what i want..
thanks again

Tell us what you found out.
As long as I know, there is no way to extract video/audio togather, they are 2 different files.
What I may ending doing is to reproduce from my powerbook to my tower via digital and that is it. The music videos and documentals seems doesn't have codecs.

It depends exactly what the VOB is, where it came from, etc. VOB files on DVD disks (the actual movie file[s]) are generally CSS-encoded. In either case I would get a hacked copy of Flask called FlaskMPEG-DeCSS. I have it and it works wonders on encoded and unencoded works, but make sure you follow a tutorial; syncing video and audio and getting all the details right is a pain.
Sometimes I just want short segments from full movies for my VJing so I play it with VideoLAN (http://www.videolan.org/) with hardware acceleration (overlay) turned off and capture segments with Hypercam (http://www.hyperionics.com/hc/index.asp). The cool thing about VideoLAN is you can force the window to a certain size (320x240) so you don't have to resize later, and if your computer is fast enough to do realtime encoding with your favorite VJ codec (MidiVid Performance here) you don't have to do any post-capture editing.
