Where's the love?
You know. I've seen lighting and video systems being run from one console. flawlessly.
Can VJ's afford creating a larger rift between Vidiots and Lampies?

I think that if you are friendly to the lampy and talk with him about what you are going to do with screens etc. He/she will be more than happy to take you in consideration in their lighting setup. Because all just wan't to make a great show. In the theater where I work I do the lighting and also sometimes do the visuals at a dance party. I really plan where to place the lights in position to the beamer. Also consider that if you rely heavilly on almost white colors in your vj-ing that you will really piss off the lampy because that creates so much light that the most of his darker colors wil dissapear in the light of your beamer. I had some arguments with a vj about this wo used a lot of white, but I was supported by the the dj and some people of the audience who also complained about the bright light. (this is in a fairly small room) So if you talk to the lampy and consider your use of colors everything will be just fine and everybody will be happily working together. If not get you're own technical crew and do it you're self. Works fine for me :p

This supposed battle between lighting engineers / operatives and VJ's is really stupid.
A good lighting operator makes an incredible difference to the atomosphere at any music night. A good lighting operator will be controlling things manually all night, making sure that the lights match the music or building the atomosphere.
If you work with the lighting engineers / operatives you can really enhance your show... I do it all the time.
I did Heavens 21st Birthday party (5 screens in the mainroom, live footage of dance acts plus a 5 hour set). I positioned my rig between the lighting desk and the DJ, we all worked together, letting each other know what we we're going to do with tempo / mood etc, and during camera work where I needed light... it was fab.
So, stop the war and start considering the audience, you owe it to them to work together and make the best show possible.

I always have a small chat with the lampy before the party starts... I always ask him to adjust his scans & movingheads to stay away from my screen and adjust the spots that provide light to the DJ so my screen is never lit during the night :)

Actually, Krez, did you mean that VJs are starting to take over the lighting jobs, thus pissing off the lampies?
I'm actually a little confused about what you meant. Clarify?

what i meant was. the lighting directors have more access to the big tours. and i've seen a recent push to run lighting and video from one console.
where does that leave the vj's?

VJ = performance and content
If we consistently show that we add loads to an event then we will still have a place.
Project Synergy (in London tomorrow night) is a prime example. The Visuals and VJ's are getting as much coverage in the event as the music/other activities.
I can see the market moving to having some form of automated visuals though, with VJ's being brought in by savy promoters. Personally I think the spread of visuals (or the defacto use of them) is both inevitable and a good thing, it;s up to us (the vj community) to make the most of it and prove our worth.
