just wondering is all. im set with the momentus task of setting up visuals for a 1 to 2 hour show and we are going to match the feel of the music as close as possible.
im tempted to use a few snippets from pretty movies and documentries, but i dont know just how dangerous this really is.

advice given to my father on D-day
keep your head down.
don't do anything stupid.
don't shoot until you can see the eagles on their helmets...
( I think the last one is irrelevent in this instance)

The only case of anybody being reprimanded for VJing with samples that I have ever heard of is Coldplay for using the entire Dumbo movie as part of there coliseum size tour production. They received a cease and desist letter from Disney and stopped using the content, and that was it.
A lot of people on this forum feel strongly against sampling for various reasons, but in reality you will not get in any trouble for copyright infringement in your VJ set.

While I have no Australian insight...
Seems to me that, unless you are makin a boatload of money, or are somehow damaging a company or artists image... you wont hear boo about it.
And if you do it'd be a cease and desist letter... not a court case.
I sample, so sue me :D

:nod:Interesting replies there from you big guns, Gary, Steve etc. Coming from a film making background, I have, until recently with the realisation that DJ's seldom make all their own records, hardly ever used any footage which is not my own, mistakenly thinking that being an 'original VJ' would somehow stand me in better position amongst the masses of rip it and squit it out VJ's out there. It hasn't. Nobody, as you rightly say, seems to give a toss. Look out now I'm about to get shameless. Hahahahah.
On a different note if anybody in Cornwall is offered a nice but battered old Tosh Qosmio down the pub, stuffed full of RAM and with a broken volume control have a quick squint at it under a black light, it'll probably say dan/orgonomix all over it . Some little chav stole it from the little cinema I was running at Holifair last weekend.
Sorry for negativness coming thru this post . I'm feeling a little disappointed with humanity right now... I love this site.:hide:

There have been so few actual documented accounts of Vjs being 'prosecuted' (if any)
a) they would not admit it
b) the big corp copyright holders will first issue cease and desist letters and people will in general take notice of them. So there will be no prosecutions.
