Masking : [hardware / hybrid or software] [pre- or post-production]
We?re asked to helpout with advice and facilities in a theater-production, I?ve figured out some ways of doing it, but I?m always open to suggestions, 'cause I never stop looking for the best and/or more simple solutions. And offcourse it has to run smooth and foolproof after the rehearsels.
Task :
Several different sized rectangular shapes, with different projections. These shapes are showed seperatly, lowered down and lifted up, one at a time. The projections have to be cut or masked to prevent to much lightning on the backdrop.
Facts :
We own a Pana ave5, several switches, laptops, beamers, etc and two of those old JVC editors (JX-SV77 and JX-W9). The projected footage is probarly on DV or DVD. The exact formats and distances will probarly not be available before the dressed rehearsels on stage.
We have to install, test and tweak every setting during the rehearsels, finally we thinking of burning everything on DVD, that will reduce the technics during the actual performance to start the player(s) on que. We don?t know, at this moment, if we have to use one or several beamers to fill the screens. We?re certainly no computergeeks or HighTech types.
Solutions :
Hardware using the ave5 and the JVC?s to mask the image and burn the outcome on DVD. Disadvantage with these devices, you can only mask out the centre of the footage (not being able to shift or repositioning the center).
Hybrid using the ave5 with a laptop atached to the camera/superimpose input (using a program to create a b/w mask). Disadvantage, same as above or maybe we have to use a laptop to play the footage and are able to repositioning the centers.
Software I do not know much about capturing and live-video streams but I know it shouldn?t be too difficult to use and prepare the right programs, but what are the right programs to use ? and what are the right settings for the job ? I don?t really like the TV-out, so we have to use/hire a scanconverter.
Sugestions ? :
Like I metioned we have to be prepared to work pretty fast as soon as we?re there, so maybe someone can give us better options or advice. Maybe we should hire some suplementary equipement to start with, to be prepared at the right moment (probarly beating the deadline at night or during a weekend :D ), any suggestions.
Does there exist any mixer or device with the ability to mask-out the four sides of the screen indepently (with for instance four sliders), to create an image with a new format into any ratio you would like but without distortion (or can this be done with any software-player) ?
Does there exist a mixer or device with the ability to repositioning the center of an image (in fullscreen not with a fixed PiP like the ave5).
I know, a lot of questions, and I didn?t even started about the recording/burning side of it yet.
(I think we know the right person to help us there).
