I'm a semi-LA VJ, I'm off to the UK for 6 weeks or so on Sunday, but I'll be back here for a while after that, I'd like to check out your show at Star Shoes. You should definitely get along to Krez's gig at Respect, lovely visuals and nice bloke too.

Yay! Finally and LA thread!
I've been looking for LA VJs - I will definitely come to the aforementioned shows ASAP.

I've been building a setup for a few months now, I'll be gigging out soon - I'm using Isadora and Pixelshox and Grid and a GL-1 for live feed at the moment. Hope to see you guys soon!

I'm from Fresno, CA. not LA... but not too far either (considering I'm in Colorado right now, nothing seems very far away anymore) but I'd love to come down sometime and throw a set down... what sort of music gets played? atmosphere? does the place come ready to VJ or....? can I bring my v4? :) what's the gear situation?

Would anyone here be interested in putting together a little LA-based VJ night? I know a few venues we might be able to use - from very informal, low-key settings, to warehouse-style if we wanted to draw a crowd. Any thoughts?

I have a few residencies that would love to see some different stuff (wait til I get back w/ my v4!) would love to host ya. I'm in Fresno, California... roughly between San Francisco and LA on highway 99. Lots of house music in Fresno, you've been warned! heh :) not a lot of $ in the smaller shows, but you're welcome to store equipment and/or pass out on a couch if you'd like.
If I know dates for sure and we can confirm, I can get you on the flyers, etc... something to throw in the gig bag and take up space, ya know? ...looks good in the scrapbook though. :)

ANY day of the week except Wednesday... AWFUL night to try to do anything... Thurs-Sun is ideal really. Mon-Wed people are either
A) Recovering from the weekend
B) Getting ready for the weekend
C) Have to work in the morning
4) All of the Above.

Props to Holly and Eric for making EyeWash a splash in NYC :)

How about Thurs Night, then?

I've got a Venue in Culver City that is interested - it's nice and flexible, too (ie room with couches for easy visuals/chillin/demonstrations/talks and an open room and sound system for harder partying :)

How about a little input as to what kind of event we'd all like? My ideas:

we meet every week and have a discussion, some software demos and QA sessions, and maybe a performance or two for the benefit
of the other artists.

The event is open to all interested parties, though, not just practicing artists. The idea is to proliferate the video art/VJ movement
and educate/equip those interested, while providing a support base.

When we feel ready as a group, we could designate one of the meeting nights a 'performance', and invite our DJ friends and an audience, charging a modest cover to repay the Venue for the hosting.

With a regular meeting, we can solidify the VJ movement in Los Angeles and get some quality visuals into the clubs and venues!

I am 100% serious about putting in the effort to get a real VJ movement in LA. Let's do it!

I've been waiting to meet up with other LA projection artists for quite some time now. I used to tour around with a band called Particle, so I had the chance to work at a few clubs in the area. Fais do do, The Roxy, The Knitting Factory, House of Blues, The Glaxay. By the way the Knitting Factory is awesome since they have a huge white wall behind the stage. I would love the chance to just rap about all the technology that is out there, and show everyone just how ignorant I am. There is a strong possibility that I will be doing a show this weekend, late night on Saturday in the small room at Fais do do. Only problem is my screen is getting repaired and I don't think my other one will fit on that stage...so we will see what happens. Hopefully I can meet up with ya'all on Thurs...what time????

Danks,

Alrighty, I'll take that as a vote for Thurs :)

I'll talk to the venue owners (it's called Basswerks, in Culver City) about a starting date, and either every week, or maybe every other week. For the first meeting, I'd like to do some product demos - I'll start a new more appropriately-name thread (ie, LA VJ Meeting Thursdays at Basswerks or something similar) once the venue's locked down.

Surya, Thurs could be good by me.

Also are you still planning on doing your Sunday Sept the 14th event in Culver City that you emailed me about earlier. Is it at Basswerks.

I am all for doing anything to learn more about and support the growth of the VJ community here in LA. I have been surprized as it has been a little hard to find here in LA. Thought it would be more active.

Although I have checked out Micheal's Tues events at the Club Star Shoes in Hollywood before.

I have created a a 3d VJ program called Zuma. You can check it out at www.3dmaxmedia.com

Let me know when you guys are planning on getting together. And let me know if there is anything I can do to help.:grouphug:

I've got a gig in LA for New Year's Eve at a place called The Good Hurt. I was wondering if anyone has been there? and if so, what's it like? do I need to bring screen(s) is my main concern.

I went along there to see a friend VJ a few weeks ago, very cool decor, a twisted medical theme.
I don't believe they have any equipment permanently there, they didn't have their own projector (though they did have a big screen TV!) and I didn't see any sign that they had their own screens. One thing to watch out for is that they've got a comparatively low ceiling; if you've got big, I'd try and get measurements from the promoter.

The venue's pretty close to where I work, so get in touch if you need more info...

huh-- that's right down the street from where I live! have to check it out-- do they have regular nights, or is this a one-time thing? I'm new to the L.A scene, just moved here in Sept, been doing stuff in Chicago for the last couple years. Cool to see a L.A VJ thread!
I heard about some event at Bassworks in Culver city this December, does anyone have any info on that? Would love to check out what y'all up to ....

I'm not sure about Good Hurt, haven't made it along there in quite a while now.

LAVA, the local VJ group, is going strong, there's some info on the site:
http://la-va.org

There's a meeting coming up on Dec 9th at Basswerks, hope you can make it along, we're a friendly bunch.

thanks,

Greetings LA vjs. I am making a trip to the US and LA is one of my destination spots. I plan on giging with WordVirus for the New Year. I then plan on heading to LA. Is there any visual happenings after the new year in January 2005? If so please let me know. I would like to offer VJ exchange services. If you plan on coming to Europe make sure you put Valencia, Spain on your list.:)

hey kyle, send an e-mail to one of us la-va folk when you get into town. rumor has it theres some events coming up in later dec, early jan though things are kinda slow now. it'd be cool to at least hook up and talk shop over a drink or 2.

hey saltyrobot, definitely come down to basswerks on the 9th. we don't have a whole lot planned as far as demos go, but we're still on for the meeting.

Dec 9 is some good timing, leaving town on the 11th. Koolio, I'll c-you guys there! BTW, is the bassworks event shop talk, open jam, demos?

Anyone from Vegas know of anything going on in Sin-City mid or end of month?

trotskythecat

all three. Demos + Shop Talk with some Visual Jamming afterwards. I'm bringing in a low-key DJ for this one so we can have some tunes.
