View Full Version : Who pays for VJC, and who should pay?

Is Exhale the only one that keeps VJC online, and if so, isn't their a way to help spread the costs??
Where should VJC resources come from?

Commercial sites that get directly linked for product listings seems like about the right place to get some monetary support, vjc has enough readers.

Yep - commercial vendors. They are already promoted plenty on this website - why not include a small fee?
Allthough that will probably lead to 'biased' reviews won't it!!
Hell sell a few things on here - not too much - I don't want any (let alone a zillion) banners zinging out everytime I visit.
Perhaps just mixers, software and a few little bits n pieces (maybe even projectors??)
I see your point but I was under the impression that vjcentral was linked somewhat to audiovisualisers.com - there seems to be enough commercial activity flowing through there at the moment.
I don't think the guy needs much $$$ to keep a php site of this size hosted. His time should be considered though and I don't mind people making some personal profits from this site (he's earn't it methinks).
Just don't overcommercialised things... it'll turn into www.vjc.cocacola.com before you know it.

I don't think anyone here would want to over commercialize VJC..
I don't think it's a matter of Exhale not having to spend much to up keep this site...
what I would like to see is some value added services that could be profitable to the site, and thereby increase bandwidth for streaming, have more funding available for VJC sanctioned events, production of VJC DVD's, ect..
I guess what I am saying is that I feel it is time for VJC to go to the next level...it has that potential. Who knows maybe an AV label someday that could compete with the likes of moonshine...
I just don't want to see stagnation, and only having Exhale to foot the bills..I mean this is now a family, and like a family, we need to all work to support it..

for myself, I'd have no problem paying a nominal yearly fee to be a member here! like $20 or something..I'm sure noone could argue they don't get at least that much value out of this place from tech support alone...and that way we'd never have to deal with "the man" issues...
otherwise, selling a VJC DVD or something could work?

feel de same as levelhead a a fee would be ok (finally an excuse to get my self a $#@@!$N creditcard :) ) yearly or half yearly like a subscription to a mag ?? tech support contacts and most of all lots of fun :D

I prefer this idea to all the others - it means that vjc remains as open and grassroots as it is now.
I'd prefer paying to adverts, but my worry is that it would limit new members coming here. Although I guess it is little different to a magazine, so maybe not..
I think that putting out a vjc dvd could be the best way if funds are needed, if not, a call to chip in on costs..
just my thoughts

oh oh... i can see it now, hundreds and hundreds of posts like;
 YOU NEVER PUT ME ON THE DVD AND I'VE BEEN VJing FOR X YEARS!!!!
 YOU SAID I WOULD BE ON THE NEXT DVD!!!!!
:grrr: VJC IS JUST A VEHICLE FOR EXHALE AND HIS CRONIES......
mark my words this will happen if VJC puts out dvd's (there's what 2500 of us here).... the last thing we need is VJC to get away form the community feel, and imho that is what would happen. so where to get revenues from??
I would totally go in for $20/year (or even $40 with one of those snazzy t-shirts) (thats $50-100k if everybody pays)
ok, waking up from that dream, i think facilitating software (new) + hardware (used) purchases, and getting a cut from that ((if I get a great deal on a second hand mixer from someone online- why shouldn't VJC get in on that action-- the prices always sseem better than ebay, lets say thanks for that))
VJC could also have sponsors, right? I would never want to see coke(acola) here and would be really pissed if there were ever a poop-up, but i would click through to see what panasonic's vj site has to offer, would probably click through to moonshine (maybe buy something) and what with all the different projectors out there i am willing to bet that there could be a bidding war for projector sponsorships. even some of the software manufacturers have financial backing, and they want us to use that stuff, right? heck, i bet VJC could even get some dope Apple sponsorship...
forget about po(o)p-up annoyances, if VJC starts pumping out DVDs, the next thing we will be annoyed with is bitching, bellyaching and online dogfights.
maybe someone can suggest a peaceful egalitarian dvd method, and maybe it's just too early in the a.m. for me to see it....
but i am 100% for us contributing to the $$needs of VJC!

Being that this site is only a message board, i can't imagine the hosting is that expensive. $50 a month maybe? add on another $50 for VJ Central? Just a guess. Then again the bandwidth use could be high enough that it costs as much as $100 a month per site. Thats still not a lot of cash.
If you charged each member $1 per year it would cover 200% of the cost of hosting thus turning a profit. If exhale wants to make some cash thats cool with me, I'll pay a dollar. :)
if i was runnning the site, i'd use select advertisers to cover the cost. as soon as it becomes a profit venture, it becomes lame.
maybe there should just be a blurb on all the pages asking for donations.

Unless Exhale says there is a problem with funding, I wouldnt worry about it.
Id pay to avoid adverts, they suck, but I dont think Exhale likes them either.

There is one. It's on the front page of VJCentral. Blue button, lower right corner.

I'm with that- then the vjf hardcores who have posted here could give what they wanted, while the sites could still spread the gospel of vj to the public for free. Wouldn't want to put people off by paying for membership;- the accessibility of this forum is one of its greatest strengths.

An idea that can be thought over is if you donate you get to use your own avatar, if not you have a generic or none. This would still allow for the availabilty of this site to all, but would "allow" more regualr users to donate and be seen to.
This is what has happend at b3ta.com, and seems to have worked well.

avit is hosted by vjcentral too, part of the family, and we certainly want to go the route of rich media, which will sooner or later incur costs - but by the nature of the beast avit is a vehicle for such premium products as DVDs and it can be factored into festival budgets.
also on this topic, avit - as the real-world extension of vjcentral - already has the mechanisms for handling money and a fledgling means of making it accountable. would be a good place to start, if not neccessarily the ultimate answer...
till that actually becomes an issue/people have time to implement it, i'd happily go the 'pay for your avatar' route (or am i just vain!) and let the vjcentral kitty accumilate.
