Hey all -
Its been a long time and we have all been up to a lot since but I am trying to rally support and community help to better catalog what we did with AVIT and organize that information so the future can embrace it and see.

Whether this be web archives and videos or pictures.

Who has any footage? Has time to setup some galleries?

Would love some support on making this happen... ideas?

thanks.

Nix

I should have a miniDV tape with some footage of the 1st AVIT 2002 in Leeds. I can have a look for the tape. Let me know if you would be interested in DV format file or lower rez.

why not upload stuff to achive.org - this would be the best way of preserving it for the future.

yea that would be the best route, agreed! I think Miss Nix(correct me if i'm wrong here) is wanting AVit archival footage to edit together, which could then be put up on archive.org..

I have compressed 320x240 footage of several performances from AVIT San Francisco.

I'm not sure if I still have the original DV files though. I will check and see.

I will upload them to archive.org soon.

There has been some motion toward re-establishing a full archive of past AVIT events at http://avit.info . We have suffered a few recent setbacks in the form of a less than ideal host and further trademark issues. So as yet there is no public manifestation of the archive. We have been waiting until we actually have something presentable to make an official announcement. But it is being worked on and secured. In the group working on it are fRED and Flux of Visual Berlin http://visualberlin.org/ , Gianluca Del Gobbo of LPM http://www.liveperformersmeeting.net/ and myself, Todd Thille http://synesthete.com. We have access to the archive that came from AVIT UK through 2005 plus related AVIT events through LPM 2007.

yes yes yes .. why let all our hard work go undocumented!? I would put any final edits up on archive.org if that is the consensus for certain. I'm thinking a complete documentary of all the events.
Copyright aside - we still did it so we need some proper documentation.

I know its been a while on that topic... but what about the acronym? I think the notion of being an acronym was abandoned because no one could agree on it?? what about audiovisual-it ?? If we edit a documentary and call the events by their acronym instead??

Pixy... don't make me fly out there with my Mini DV cameras and start copying them myself!! ;) really though... that sounds like fun. Maybe this summer - little quasi camping/dubbing mission???

afaik
In so far as europe is concerned the AVIT name cannot be used, AVIT.info cannot be used as a domain name to document the european avits, AVIT is dead (and has been for too long now) we were in the wrong from the outset and should of simply changed the name when the problem first appeared (which was before the brighton avit) I argued for that to happen at the time but was out voted.

frustrating for those of us that had spend significant parts of our lives working on the project but their you go - you live and learn. Really trying to revive the project and keep the avit name is a dead end street - we should never of used the name and when we found out that it was someone else's we should of changed it.

TBH thinking about this stuff makes me really angry - did you know that one of the founders of AVIT uk had VJ'd at an event organized by the other avit BEFORE the leeds event?

It's such a simple case of us being in the wrong that i cannot believe that it was allowed to happen.

I'd rather see video from the project on archive.org and an article about the events we had done on the web somewhere (i'm not sure where - but not anywhere with avit in the domain name!) This would be a nice historical record of the stuff that was achieved without too much danger of further aggravating the trademark issue.

I strongly suggest to anyone who seeks to organize VJ events in the future to create a new name and to make sure it is not trademarked when you do so.

I see your point sleepytom - but you still never commented on the acronym. the word AVIT is not to be used but what about Audiovisual-it ???

Also-I don't believe we are breaking any copyrights by collecting documentation. We don't even have to refer to the events by name...

as i understand trademark law we would not be able to use audiovisualize-it either - it's too close to the avit name which we have used in the past.

i would suggest that we try and get as much video as possible uploaded onto archive.org (rushes as well as finnished edits) - again i'm feeling that we've been burnt with this before (avit brighton had a whole documentary crew making a film which has never been finnished, as far as i know all the rushes are lost and we are left with no footage :( )

I really wanted to see more solid documentation come out of avit - i had hoped that each event would be organised in a more opensource fashion where people put the documents thay had created in the building oif the event online as a resource for others to use. But sadly this never happened - avit worldwide was a non-existant thing :(

so i hope that some info can apear on the web somewhere - maybe on a new domain name such as vjevents.net or something - i'd certainly be more interested in putting energy into something that was 100% absolutly safe from trademark issues than risk seeing it all torn down again.

as synesthete already said. the archive project is being worked on. as of today's news, the legal issue is almost solved. avit will probably be safe for future noncommercial use.

more details will follow as soon as there are more concrete informations...

umm

i've been waiting for that for 5 years, I hold out no hope of it ever happening.

I put some considerable time and effort into all of this years ago. Because of the stupid situation with the trademark all of this work has been wasted. The current development is also most likely a waste of time because of the refusal to stop using a name which we have no right to.

Toby can reasure you that the AVIT name is OK to use. He is wrong. He has been largely responcible for the confusion with this issue and he has been very misleading to the AVIT.de people about how trademark law works and about his history with AVIT(tm).

I really cannot belive this is still going on?

I have an idea that we will be archiving the old AVits, and starting a new brand soon!
First things first, and that is getting Avit archived and buried..
So to echo Miss Nix's original post...
Er-Calling out all those who have any AVit footage, Please respond here!!
