hi folks...

since more than 3 years im looking for the best codec. i know - theres not really 1 best codec - but i want to have the best codec for my demands...

i tried many codecs - none of them satisfies me completely...

cinepac had a very bad quality
divx - the same + too less keyframes, you know?
and so on....

i need a codec where every frame is a keyframe + has good quality, if possible - a small filesize and is really fast during rendering??

any ideas which codec is the best one? what codecs you all use??? where can i get them, (demo or full)

thanks ahead

The big question you need to ask, is what is the best codec for my use?

If you're using clip-triggering programs, I'd say go with the midivid performance codec. Triggers fast, can be all keyframes, can cut back and forth nice, and renders, if not the fastest, at an acceptable rate for me. I like the midivid mjpeg codec a lot too, and it renders faster, but for some reason the performance codec runs much better with more than one clip playing at a time.

So, how *are* you playing your visuals?

Midivid performance is best for more than one clip, but gives bad colors in some cases.
Indeo 5 isn`t that performant, but much better quality. good choice when you need the details.

I do often combine these 2, 1 indeo clip and the rest midivid.

Hope there will be something like midivid with better quality in the next time. (Perhabs based on indeo or divx, but optimized for speed and not for compression)

i tried around and think that the "MainConcept MJPEG Codec" is nearly the best.

Really good quality - better than midvideo, really small filesize, and renders very fast.

for a small video of 30 secs in 320x240 midvideo needs 3:45 to render. MJPEG does that in 50 sec (!!!!!)
and - as mentioned - in much better quality.

the great disadvantage is - MJPEG is not for free. ok - it costs only $20 - but in maybe there will exist a better codec soon ... you know what i mean??

what do you think about that codec?
