I'm in the market for a new vj box i'm building. I've built boxes for audio production and recording before and the motherboard chipset is a very important thing when it comes to audio. is it as important when it comes to vj boxes? I plan on getting a P4 processor so should i just stick with intel only? VIA and SIS are a big no no in the audio production world, does it matter as much with vj software such as Visual jockey?

Intel Processors tend to be more stable than AMD, they also slow down if they start to over heat unlike AMD chip that just stop working until you reboot. Temerature is very important consideration seeing as most venues are hot places. I have built myself a P4 2ghz machine with an ASUS motherboard and I have never had any trouble with it. You can also buy an external box for ASUS motherboards that will monitor andd display the temperature of the CPU, Memory, fan speeds etc. Abit are another good make of motherboards, these two makes are the ones to get. Another consideration will be your power supply, Ethermax are a good make. Also you should make sure you have got enough air intake/extraction and buying some HD fans could be a good idea. What type of case do you intend using? What graphics card are you looking at?

I plan on getting an ati all in wonder radeon for video. Im not sure on a case yet. You're right about fans being important, heat can take a toll after 6 hours of processing in a hot indoor venue.

i have always been a fan of AMD.. i can't justify the
expense of an intel chip..
i'm also gonna do the radeon 8500 128meg..
with the AT7 MAX board.. 4 channel RAID with
the highpoint controller.. DDR333.. looking forward
to 512MB P2700 corsair with a CL of 2.0
gonna do the 120gig WD 8meg 7200s, and eventually
get another for a RAID setup..
I'm gathering money for this now.. .please tell
me what you think of the ATI board.. all the reviews
are just a list of accessories and some stupid benches..
a real world test of this board would be wonderful!
esp from a VJ!
thanks

With visualJockey the main factor to gain framerate are the BUS and RAM speed. You should check the visualJockey user forum for more hardware info :

hi
i think it is a good thing to have fasttrack ide-raid controller on-board of the motherboard so you can use raid-0 (striping) to enhance the speed of the hd?s (i prefer ibm 7200 hd?s)
than it would also good have some hd-fans for colling them down !
the case i would use for this is an rack-case with 3 or 4 u
i love this cases because they are rackmountable have some good shockabsorbing hd-holder and some card-downholder so that no pci-card can come out of his slot on the transportway.
look forward when buying a motherboard maybe use new fast RAM and FSB_rates like 333 Mhz?
regards
Linus
