How to make an animated avatar?

Any tips on how to make an animated avatar?

Obviously the first thing to do is just to fuck about and see what works, but i noticed that there in nothing the the FAQ about the best or even any approach or file type.

I'm guessing an animated GIF is the best format and obviously 19.5kb and 50 x 50 pixels. Will it accept anything else?

What is the best software to make animated GIFs from video clips?

Any tips welcome. :drums:

Well my current TIFF (couldn't make an animated GIFF) is approximately 27, 600 times bigger than the max allowed.

Max allowed approx: 19 kb

My tiff approx: 512 mb

(Dyslexic maths may apply)

It has to be a GIF if you want to use it animated on the forum as far as I know.

Well i've got it down to a 116kb gif. Its 8 seconds long and 50 by 50 px.

Any tips on how to lose 96.5kb?

god i hate animated avitars - i might turn them off again soon...

they are incredibly distracting when near text your trying to read (eg on forums) and they do not make you look cool...

Point taken. I'll change it now for a bit untill i find something a bit less intense/hypnotic/insane. I just wanted to make one that worked to start off with. I'll think of something more subtle and non-psychosis inducing.

To be honest generally i totally agree wit you Tom and no offense to the good man himself but the only thing I find more "distracting" than paranoidkarma's alias is his animated gif. Nuff said.

There's nothing worse on a forum than having to hold the scroller bar down to pause epilepsy inducing avatars. Far from being not cool its actually wrong.

Having said that I think that: robotfunk, asterix and holly have mastered the art.

I learnt a shit load in the process. Maybe I should write a guide for noobs on vjcentral, with a clear warning against hypnosis and just being bloody annoying.

Gimme 5 and i'll hit stabalise on vishnu's tie fighter.
