I figured I better put this in this section in case this is a dumb question. What is the difference between those two files? The reason I ask is that my music/video program plays both files fine. Is it ok for me to just rip to the vob file and not convert all the way to mpeg2 if my program plays them fine?

Hi MJZ55,
The VOB files are the multiplexed audio and video from the MPEG2 and the wav or aif file(audio part). VOB's will play in
software, but mpeg2's won't play in a standalone DVD player..

So, if I have no intentions to play vob's anywhere but on my computer it would be ok? Makes a big difference in time between just ripping and playing the vob's and then converting completely to an mpeg2.

yep, as long as the DVD vob doesn't have Macrovision or some other kind of incription.. Also VOB's are usually divided into 1 gig segments depending on the overall size of the DVD, and would have to be used in that respect
:)
