Now that most of you use contracts to ensure you get paid, i was wondering how many of you use a rider? If so, what response do you get from promoters?

Not a problem, always had some sort of rider.
Most of our gigs nowadays provide a rider for the whole tech crew so everyone gets fed and wattered.
One of our first early venues always gave us a 24 pack of lager, great at first until a few experiments with drinking it all and working.....ended up giving most of it away.

when we have asked for a rider, it usually confuses the promotor, as it tends to be along the lines of 3 litres of mineral water.
they seem to be expected to be asked for alcohol, I guess.

still, we've got the one lined up for the ultra-corporate people we feel like annoying gig - a 500gm tub of mixed nuts, with all the almonds taken out. ;)

Always have a rider. Thankfully, I've become experienced at using equipment and solving problems while Im drunk, so mines a bottle of JD. Also I requested food, hotels and transport for gigs. Never had a problem with promotors.

ha ha! i actually had a written up rider back with fuel records... two foot square worksurface, a lead going to a pre-rigged projector, and two whisky-and-gingers.

:D I personally like "a bowl of GREEN M&Ms", but riders are important... they make sure that your NEEDS, not wants, are taken into account. Food, drink, transport & lodging... hmmm, should I add a "control the fucking fog" rider?!!

Contract? What's that?

I usually make sure I'll have a table and clean power, and access to free drinks, a few guestlist spots, and a place to sleep. Depends on the gig, but usually I don't have a written contract. I've only been screwed once, but no contract would've helped me there. (word was the promoter was in jail for risking all the party's income selling meth)
