I went to see Coldcut last friday.
Great tunes, up there with Hendrix, who popped up on the visuals at some point of the night. Damn long set, no bad tunes, not one. F'kin great music.
But the video.
A great shame.

Still Matt from CC has done a great deal for the visual scene...

All the video was low res, kind of washed out, dirty looking, the content was mild, it just looked tacked on. Basically it was just dull. I asked load's of people after the set what they thought and none of them could remember anything about it.

I saw them on the august bank holiday weekend no problems with the visuals then although they did have to borrow my friends V4 due to a problem with theirs!!!!

I've spent a long time trying to figure out exactly what this phrase means and in the end I've given up.

No one menioned "shite".
One of the best nights I've been to this year actually.
Just disappointed not to have my socks blown off by the viz.

have you ever been blown away by someone's visuals? if so who was it and why was it impressive?
The only time i have been really blown away by visuals was at the optronica imax opening night. The strobing geometric patterns were so unpleasant that it actually made me feel sick - to the point of having to leave and go and sit in the bar till they had stopped! I was certainly impressed by this but i'm not sure that it was the intended effect! (i suffer from occasional photosensitive migraines and my brother is epileptic so maybe i have a genetic predisposition to get upset by this kind of video?)

eclectic methods recent shows have knocked my socks off, i have to say. it was the juxtaposition of such diverse imagery and musical styles in such an elegant way that cheered me up.
also whoever vjed for bonobo at 2005 big chill was shithot, cos all they were playing was tracking shots of people walking along, but cos it was synched so tight and was fresh and suprising.
and the first time i noticed visuals and appreciated them was the orb at reading in late 90's when they did a live mix for little fluffy clouds. to have a song and a video that i was familiar with improvised simultaeously was mindblowing to little me at the time.
but yea, bad tunes are waaaay worse than bad visuals.
note to self: stop procrastinating. gah.

The ones by United Visuals Artists at the Chemical Brothers last weekend or maybe the weekend before were very good.
When I get around to it I'll up the pictures. I have 2 short videos as well I'll put up on vimeo and youtube.

err no
Camart (www.camart.co.uk) are the people who wrote VJamm - Matt Black / Coldcut have funded it to a degree and have been responsible for a fair bit of the functionality design but their is not a single line of code written by coldcut in VJamm.
Coldcut have been involved in various organisations which have promoted VJing in various formats. They have inspired many people to start doing visuals, they have helped with r+d on a number of products used by VJs and done more bits and pieces for the VJ scene than many high profile VJs.

Specifically Russell from the VJamm Allstars is the main programer of VJamm- the other allstars don't directly write the code but do help out with R+D etc etc.
VJamm Allstars drinking? no not us! we are sober as a judge (honest guv)
We should change the name to the VJamm Drinksters (mind you the Austrians do a pretty good job of keeping up :) )

In terms of ColdCut.. I've experienced some well integrated audio visual performance from them...but also some dire ones. Musically I cannot fault them and I think that a lot of their energy is focused towards the audio aspect... but in recent times the visual side is definitely not what you'd expect from a top AV act like them...I recon they should head hunt a talented VJ to sort this out... and then there was three.

Shite is shite, whatever the medium it's in .
Crap music will effect great visuals negatively and visa versa?
e.g.: You go to a good restaurant for a meal...but the toilets are blocked and the place stinks of shit...are you going to enjoy your meal?
Placing one of our senses over the other is frankly naive...and this is from someone that's been involved in the "Audio Visual" scene for a long time now...?

whats bad on low res visuals.
why should i do hdtv visuals, even when the big tv stations go backrupsy because they cannot afford it to make exclusive hvtv sport broadcasts.
lowres can give a sort fo creative touch, and not all that blinks is golden.

People go to clubs to listen to music, dance, drink and pull. They don't mind too much what the visuals are like whilst they do these things.
Bad music sends people home - great visuals doesn't keep them there.
if the music had been shite then we would of seen the club empty before they finished - as it goes there wasn't even anyone outside smoking as they were too busy dancing. If visuals really were as important as music then we'd all be much better paid and super busy out on tour with the worlds best acts. Visuals are not as important as music so we are here arguing with each other about this and that!

Yes we all know drugs are what drive the club scene, proof = crap tunes filling dance floors

Ever acured to you that some people might not feel like dancing, getting pissed and shagging the first person that smiles at them...? Maybe They're just there to have a good time without your simplistic generalisations, clubs that takes the whole audio visual scene seriously will fulfil that and stand out as places that offer something extra for your eyes and ears.

yeah right...
why don't you run one then?
really i do offer the best of luck if you decide to do this - i've tried before and it is not a winning formula.
open your eyes - you'll notice that the clubs which make serious money offer the drink, dance and shag. Seen anything good on at the honey club recently? no didn't think so!
Most mainstream clubs don't even bother booking name audio acts these days - they have resident DJs doing 70's, 80's, 90's nights where the sole point of going is to drink and fuck.
you can say fuck dance let's art if you want to, Just don't think that your onto the next big thing....
