View Full Version : links to VJ showreels?
brain

hi,
i would appreciate if any of you can post some (working!) links to example clips of your own work or that of other VJs. searching on the web and in profiles is quite tiresome and not effective. but i (and i guess many others) are interested what the state of the art is.
so if you have any clips in any format up on the web - post the URL.
thanks!

Hi,
Just put up a new show reel (QT) last night. It's broadband, but I kept the download under 10 megs. My work is 100% original CG and bluescreen dancers/characters composited live at DVD resolution mpeg2 (web compression really skanks in comparison;) ). Click on the "Featured Video" link to watch. Other videos also on the site from our theater performances and such. Sign up on our mailing list while you're there.
Thanks!

folks,
i've put some clips here (http://www.eyetrap.net/fosfor/clips/index.html)
these are recorded live in clubs. the standard setup is 2x svhs vcr, mx-12 and sometimes a mx-1 (oooldschool! :D )
my mix stock consists of looped and processed samples and abstract patterns generated entirely in analog setups of feedbacked worn out 80s stuff. (hi levlhed!)
so, no computer before the quicktimes.
any comments appreciated!

9th May 2004, 08:44 PM
juddering, i like things that stutter... the second mix is nice, the others could do with much higher quality production - flat lo-fi clips and cross-fade layering that can never do them justice imho. ie, in the first clip the blue is a really nice motif, but doesn't really do much - it would be so much better if the clips had far more contrast and the blue saturated those clips. but i guess you need software mixers and photoshop style transfer modes for that really.
its obviously considered stuff, tho', i like where you're coming from.

On Another note,
I'm going to have a dedicated section of the Space Bunker Session for VJ Showreels, and will be grabing them from your links here over the next week or 2.
All the VJ showreels that are selected will have the artist meta data encoded into the stream(Which will be aired every other Saturday with the next Bunker session being May 22nd @ 2-5 PM MST(-7 hours GMT).
I will also include the artist names and email's during each showreel's playtime..
If, for whatever reason, you would prefer I do not air your showreels, please PM me and let me know..

You have to realize that we only broadcast @28.8 and single ISDN, so the
video is going to be pretty blocky at time...
I'm going to preencode the entire VJ showreels portion and upload those steams this time around, and see if that helps..(we normally digitize and encode a live feed at once with one pass)
Good News BTW and a bit OT, but it looks like I will be streaming saturday nite at AVit on piratetv.net!!:jump2:
I will be just streaming 1 cam and be mixing in the title graphic's and such..
Should Be Fun..
akira_k
2nd June 2004, 04:41 PM
I don't mean the encoding, though I will provide you with the ebst encoding I can to reduce loss at a minimum.
I mean the content, it's just too raw and too shorty! Our showreel will maintain the "rawish" feel because I'm kind of fed up of seeing post-produced edited showreels that don't show how the actual LIVE performance looks like, but I htink we can do better than those cut-up shots ;)
Looking forward to teh AVIT streaming, since I can't be there, thsi should be the next best thing :)
Cheers!

If I want to see an editing demo I'd hire you to edit my video, not to VJ.
From this great looking reel I deduce: the guy edits video like hell... But can he VJ as well as he edits? I have no clue, since the reel doesn't show it.

Hi,
So I finally decided to post this... the session me & my crew did last summer in barcelona.
It?s more like a live act thing in that we rehearsed the session with the DJ beforehand, so it's not all down to improvisation. So it?s not completely improvised but it?s all live.

its fair enough if people WANT to put down what genre of music their showreel is with.
BUT, I think as we are looking at visual styles here, surely it is a good thing to see a wide variety? even if you don't like the music on a reel, surely you can learn something from, be inspired by, or offer your constructive criticism on the visual presentation of it.
dance music especially, has become so incredibly genre-ised and sub-genre-ised that producers/djs get (to some extent) closed off to different possibilities, be it self-imposed, or expectations.
this is what i like so much about visuals, people are in general much more open to creating something different, original, and from their own perspective. doesn't mean some of it isn't gonna be crap, but at least its their slant.

Good points here! Agreed with all of it - just isn't much effort for someone to put down a genre, imho visuals compliment and extend the emotional response to whatever musics on offer (im talking specifically about dance music here as my kind of energy based visually are usually for nu skool breakbeat or drum n bass as thats just my taste.
i dont and i assume lots of other people dont have time to read every post here and are searching for what they like!!
so it would be dope it some heavy energy fuelled demos popped up!!
respect going to all!! keep puttin your work out!!

Well, that would be me ;)
What's going on in the screens is not very noticeable, hopefully I will upload a reeel to my site about it soon.
By the way that's got to be one of the worst edited videos I've seen in my life :P
Shit thing about the setup was the LCD screen. Can you notice it's CUT ON THE SIDES? We lost 2 and a half bars of the colorbar test signal. YES, that big. The guy who built the setup, against my wil, is a total MORON who doesn't know shit about visuals
Sasha and Digweed don't have a video monitor, that's Digweed's powerbook running the screensaver ;)
The RAIN time was tremendous. Rain started to pour all over my rig! Thanks to the brilliant stage managr and my friends, we were able to relocate, and all that bit was played with me holding the PCR-30 in my hands, like those old guitar-keyboards of the 80s ;D
Well, a nice night ;D Thanks for sharing that video, I didn't know it existed!

Hi there. Nice to see a real time showreel in there we don't get too many of these.
I felt that some of the effects looked a bit dated when against the movers and shakers of the demo scene. But some really nice toucha like the hand drawn effect on the 3d models.

I meant that the actual showreel was a program - exe file which was unusual. Not VJ taht do stuff in realtime (although there are very few that do they stuff all (or nearly all) in what I would class as realtime)

Ah so there is a showreel sticky...Anyways we made this showreel in March and it was shown at a festival in Italy, as part of the Dutch VJ scene. We are 3 guys from Holland and came 3rd last year at Visual Sensations (Belgium/Netherlands vj competition). We're a real live crew banging away on midi controllers (yummy)

heres a kind-of showreel, edited live mix from dnb set by EZ Rollers - 9th June at the Phoenix, Exeter! Dont worry, the audio is recorded from the sounddesk - not a distorted microphone recording!

Short edits from our recent tour of Spain + US:
http://vjzoo.com/ev.htm
Our showreel is a full-length DVD that we update and rebuild every 6 months or so. Jasper's started uploading some of the tracks off that to YouTube as we get permission from the musicians etc. If you just click on any of the videos on our site, you'll get taken to YouTube where you can specify to see all of our videos. I think there's about 10, and we'll upload more when we finishing running the Painting With Light workshops in a couple of weeks. I also need to rebuild our site so that we have a page just for videos. My to-do list is getting out of hand!
Feedback welcome :)

Here's a medium length DVJ Set from me, not all in my usual style. Quite a bit of cliche material to start but progressing and going a little darker. i've used samples from fellow VJ's from the forum to demonstrate the fact that I do re-mix. Thanks to:
Holly
Lucidhouse
DavetheVJ
Analogue Recycling
Any other who I've failed to mention big thanks for the clips.
The set is reduced in quality obviously for internet streaming and is around 55mins long. Aimed at the main stream club enviroment.
Unfortunately during the format conversion or upload a slight error has occured in the sound at the beginning but it's not drastic. I'll look into this.
This may only be viewed by PC users at present and I am in search of a provider who can accommodate the Mac gang:) This company are also attempting to get the Mac issue sorted.
Should anyone wish a DVD demo or individual clips I've used please contact me.
Recorded using the New Pioneer DVJ 1000 and DJM 800 and a JVC DV Cam.
Feedback would be appreciated:)
Hope you enjoy it.

Here's a medium length DVJ Set from me
very good stuff! really well synced to the tunes and some nice content in there - espesh like the people skipping and the clip-blends you use.
What was your setup for this?
SteveG
25th July 2006, 06:51 PM
Each individual tune/track is on it's own DVD. I make/record each of the DVD's recording the tunes I've downloaded or purchased whilst mixing live visual content. For this I use 2 DVJ X1's, Arkaos/Oxygen8 controller, Motion Dive and Resolume going through a V4. Audio is recorded through a DJM 1000 and EFX 1000. I record the discs using a Pioneer HD 720S recorder. I then play and record the set as a DVJ ie DJ'ing playing the discs on the DVJ's and mixer only (on this occssion I used the New DVJ 1000's and a DJM 800)
When playing a live gig I would still normally have 1 laptop running a programme such as Arkaos that I can quickly add texts in etc.
The clip of the single girl skipping is a Motion Dive graphic.
Glad you like it, and thanks for the feedback telekinetix.

Hi there
After 2 years of after hours work on my vj sets, I am jumping out as a wanna be vj.
I have not yet played live..
I have uploaded some samples of my work on my myspace page.
Check it out and leave a comment - As I am learning, I encourage you to be critical - not that I mind compliments...
Give me a friend request if you like what you see and you use myspace.
Hope to hear from you.
