I am on a very mind numbing computer course and have just bought an IBook. To keep me entertained I thought I'd have a go at vj in, but am not getting far. Can anyone suggest any freeware/cheap software that I can use to start messing around with and any toher tips to get me started? Cheers...

Check the downloads page at AudioVisualizeers (http://www.audiovisualizers.com/toolshak/vjprglst.htm) for many free and demo vj apps to play around with.
In your spare time read the FAQs (http://www.vjcentral.com/list/faq/31) on VJCentral.
Good luck and enjoy.

I find Arkaos VJ very cool app for Mac. It works in OSX and its quite fast on my iBook 700 with 384 ram.
Its not cheap but there is 20 (or 30) day demo and after that you can still use it but you see arkaos.net banner on top of screen.

also take a look at PixelShox Studio:
http://www.pixelshox.com
it runs natively in OSX and performance is great if you have a relatively good video card.
download the user setups if you want to see what can be done (I have uplaoded a setup there).
it's beta so there is some lacks of functionnality there and there but stability is totaly there: I have used it for 8 hours in a row in fullscreen mode and performance never decreased.

If you like 3d graphics and 10+ movies layered onto each other and are not a programmer but an artist :) , you could try PilgrimR1:

Have just been messing with the Arkaos demo version really... Donwloaded PixelShox but don't really know where to start as there are no tutorials etc. Anyone got any advice?
Have also downloaded some other demos but had no time to try them yet! Too much coursework on at the mo but have my compulsory hour or so 'mucking around' time before I start work in the mornings! This VJ stuff is far more interesting than coding useless applications!
All good... laters

IMHO, Arkaos and
PixelShox are the best balanced VJ apps for the Mac (flexibility vs. ease of use vs. performance) Arkaos allows for an arbitrary number of FX to be piled up and is a great clip librarian. PixelShox has a very elaborate layering scheme that allows for some amazingly intricate compositions. Pilgrim for the PC looks very promising, and of course visualJockey, the holy grail of VJ tools (Though not for Mac :().
