i'm not really just starting, but this is a pretty basic query.....

need two monitors on my G4 desktop 500. one for the interface of various apps, the other as an video output that i can view

[this is to be a very flexible setup for a whole array of uses]

i was thinking of a desktop doubler with a scanny such as the UTV2000. This would allow for one controlling VGA on the larger res output. And the 2nd 800x600 to go through the scanny and back to the monitor.

Now am i just stating the obvious [again]? Will this work. The issues involving under/overscan can be resolved through the UTV [or so i understand]. Are these doubler any good? I'm looking at a unit made by Village Tronics which kinda concerns me, they sound like they deal more in genetic poultry than video

what do ya reckon cre - then i can have my complete kit

yours sincerely

Um.... I'm not sure what the doubler is (link?). I use a G4 that was built for two monitors (I think it uses the NVIDIA Gforce4?). The main DVI cable goes to my studio display, the second VGA cable goes to a scan converter which accepts resolutions from 640*480 to 1024*768, and converts to composite and s-vid....

i know what you're saying about better cards, but i only need vga, not dvi, unless they come with adapters.

thanks for your help holly - its very much appreciated

[i'm on a budget of ?250 for this, ?150 on a scanny and the rest on a card, give my v-4 another 3 weeks and global domination will be mine, oh yes]

I like the way they say this card can offer full view on one screen and a zoomed view of the same screen on the other. That totally sounds usefull with most VJ apps, photoshop, AfterEffects, etc.

My only hesitation is that it's only 16MB of video memory. That's just 8MB per screen. Pretty low. I don't know that it would really cause any problems, but if you are looking to work in 3D or something similarly graphic intensive, it might slow down or possibly even choke (maybe). Also there is no OpenGL support, so these cards will not really take any pressure off the processor.... Even the description claims that graphic cards sit idle while waiting for the processor ? not too sure how true that is.... With wordprocessing, yeah, but video? Flash?

Is there maybe another option with a little more memory? 32MB might make a real difference if it is not too much more expensive.
