aside from the very dubious necrophiliac side of this whole event - and lets face it, the only other nations who worship the dead like this are the North Koreans and the Iranians, of more even questionable morality than the show itself were the visuals.
yet more broadcast video pap posing as moving wallpaper for back-slapping bands.
at least we know who to blame this time..
One Dot Zero.
some of it was ok, there were even some moments of genius. but most of it was dross.
HD dross at that, even though the screen itself was only a fraction bigger than SD PAL.
all driven by a Barco Encore system onto a central 'high def' screen ( high def-my arse) and a lower def Mytek? semi transparent LED screen with lighting pods behind.
I had turned up at wembley with the usual footage we had been using for the past 3 years for Duran Duran only to be told by the Video director that it wasn't 'suitable' as a backdrop for live TV.
- this despite the fact we had used the same stuff countless times for OB and a 'live from' DVD
So we decided to go with the footage One Dot Zero had prepared - almost by accident - as a replacement - at the time it seemed like a simple breakdown in communications...
so imagine my surprise when halfway through the show, after duran had played, we see an almost exact copy of the duran footage being used for a different band.
No wonder they didn't want to use the duran content so early in the show...
So a voodoo doll is in the post for the One Dot Zero boys who not only had the audacity to can my visuals to save their own face, but were even brass-necked enough to try and steal my gig in front of me - telling the band they were welcome to use them again anytime..
just goes to show what you can do if you take enough gak.

Funny that I was wondering who did the content as it wasnt the usually stock stuff, I saw some nice stuff earlier, cant remember the artist, I only flicked past it.
Similar thing happened to me on my supposed first tv gig, the band hired in Barcos and then we get there and the LD wouldnt let us rig them.
Ahh just watching Tom jones and look at oll the black holes with gfx strobing past behind to fast, so their footage is suitable for TV is it?

As you say G that's "pap". I've seen a lot of your Duran Duran material and it would have blown theirs out of the water. Watching the show I cant help but think my CG8 can produce more interesting graphics.
Being a Scot, what the hell was the Tyne Bridge thing all about during Rod Stewarts set......a few geography lessons are needed One Dot Zero
A few things I enjoyed however and must add for a few of the sets it's been better than some of the shows broadcast of late.
Best performance so far has Brian Ferry...legend.

I think some bands did use their own content.
Kanye west did for sure...
anyway apart from the hassle I had, it still wasn't up to much ...
which is a shame for such a big gig.

*sigh* nothing I can say really.
I actually watched a bit of Duran Duran as I thought you might have done something Gary. And didn't recognise anything and presumed it wasn't you and turned over. :)
"Video director that it wasn't 'suitable' as a backdrop for live TV."
This really confuses me.
What is suitable for live TV? Are there any recognisable guidelines?
Did they actually review that all the subject material?
Is live different from pre-recorded TV?
I cannot think of too many additional guidelines apart from the normal common sense ones whern it comes to live TV.

I only saw a few clips on the Beeb this morning (we recently got cable), I think Willy & Harry acquitted themselves well.
Maybe you should have just put the old Girls on Film video on, I love the greasy pole pillow fight.

the claim was that there was not enough black in the content and the cameras would struggle with the levels.
However this didn't seem to be a problem for much of the rest of the set. Elton John for instance was very colourful.
all content had to be cleared by the royal household before showing, so it was in the hands of the Video Director a couple of days before the gig.
anyway, I am over it now.
its a small world backstage - it won't be too long before our paths cross again.

i have to say i thought the visuals were shit (im round my mums and she was watching it- honest!) but to be honest it was a bin-bag event. "cheesy" doesnt quite cover it, and the standard of act was abysmal (as expected, as the target audience for such event generally have less taste than dogshit). so maybe the visuals were shit on purpose? they ceratinly fitted in with the rest of the show more than genuinely good video would have.
still, sounds like you got jipped, deepv, next time you see them id piss in their mixer.

Wow.
I didnt think you were the sort of Rant person Gary.
I can wholey understand how you were pissed. I caught a tiny snippet over here in NZ and I reckon it a was piss poor visual show too.
Seemed to me that a lot of the transitional stuff was just Motion 3 templates with Dis name in place of "insert text here" comment.
Anyway Karma will come back and bite someone in the ass real bad.
Just look at the crispy critter from Glasgow ;-)
BTW Did you still get paid?
Oh and how was backstage?

Funny that Gary, because too much black and there are just black screens behind the artists, so thats complete bollocks, as you would have seen with several of the artists I caught a bit of.

My advice is to piss into a super soaker and then squirt the piss to the mixer. Ensure that the super soaker is dry in the outside though, you can always use rubber gloves to increase safety.

arf.
and not a body bag event.
I don't think this even needed 'visuals', beyond showing whats happening on stage, and the odd little bit on where the moneys going (where was the money going, she used to be into landmines right?).
you can get supersoaker clones from the pound shop.

i didn't know you liked seances.
i quite fancied a few scenes from the 1939 version of the four feathers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Four_Feathers).
I'm sure Harry would see the funny side.
