Hey all! So i picked up my AVE5 for $100 and i can't complain a bit...well ok maybe a bit. I am lost for words on my ideas of what this "superimpose" function is supposed to do! I run VDMX out of my comp into one channel, and a live camera feed into channel 2 of the mixer. What i desire is to remove say, one color from the live feed or comp feed and then replace it with the remaining feed. EXAMPLE: CH1 on top with black removed, where there was black on CH1 is now transparent, showing CH2 in full strength where that black was. All i can do with the superimpose function on this is make glitchy black blobs...ooh and change these to red or yellow blobs. Yes, it's kind of cool in its own way but is there a purpose to this function>?!?! Can i do my desire with this mixer?

no - you want to do lumakey or chromakey - the av5 doesn't have these features.

Try using text, titles, drawings, etc (best is stuff without much gradients). Also you can choose to replace the black or white with one of the other selectable colors instead of the other video channel. Try to be creative with what you've got, and play around with the mixer untill you know exactly what's possible with it, or maybe read the manual if you're not sure what something does.

the ave5 does support keying!
its the last fader on the right top and right bottom.
you can select key "background color" "A" "B" "Inverse" etc. cant remeber. just try all options and you will see what happens.
set the bottom fader to 100%
and try keying with the top fader.

before i bought my v4 i used keying on the ave5 a lot.

Wait, can you explain this more? You could completly remove one color from a video layer and let the other video show through, while both are at 100% opacity only one with a color removed?

yes!
well, its not that accurate though.
but still, looks pretty neat.
you can select wether key black or white, and set the keying level with the fader.
just try playing with the right top and the right bottom fader.
right bottom is opacity and right top is keying level.

last time i used the ave5 must be a year or a half. sorry, cant give you a more detailed description just out of mind.
but i can assure you, it works .....somehow ;)

hey man i have one of these baby's and have got it out to understand what your talking about. i thought this mixer did what is called chroma keying.
basically there are two possible sources, then a third called ext cam.
so if we have put sourceA and sourceB set to mix. Then on superimpose panel press the ON button, you can choose either source A, B or Ext Cam to be effected then slide the key level. it will replace the video selected with colour, to varying degrees on the key level slider. ( Which colour you choose on the left of the mixer, the back colour selector button). Or you can also press reverse which.....reverses the keying!
So does anyone know is this actually chroma keying? or is it called something else? (as i though chroma key is where, you might want to do for example green screen, in that case you TAKE AWAY the colour and replace with video, this mixer does the opposite?!

p.s. shouldn't this be in the hardware forum?

That is called superimpose it doesn't allow a literal copy of the original image through - just a matte to be taken of the original image based on the key settings you set - it is not true chroma keying - although has a broadly similar set up, just not the same functionality. A true chroma key is much more useful and doesn't give it the same 80's wedding video type effect that you quite often get with the superimpose effect.

well then im obviously wrongt with the keying function!
but! in some cases it really seemed to be luma keying.
i used it for text and dj names etc.

a colored text on black background. and cut off the black background.
i thought it was lumas keying.
obviously it was just superimpose looking like keying ;)
