my another beginers question is;) :
what resolution / compression / format you use with your video clips ? what gives the best results ? what quality is enough for performances ?

Hmmmm another nice subjective question....
personally I use 400x300 (or320x240 on my older stuff) 80% cinepak.
If you use this in a quater screen output program like SVi or Meimi with a good zoom interpolating scan convertor you will get acceptable results with a beamer where you get light bleed between the pixels, now plasma/LCD screens... thats another thing entirely :p

Personally i compress all my video at either 640 x 480 or 800x 600
i use either div4, or divx 5 based codecs and keyframe once every second.
i figure whilst 640x480 might be beyond what most people are suing these days i'm into pushing the edge especially quality wise.
but as with everything it depends on your hardware, i carry/ lug a huge case round to gigs cos it has a Raid system in it, i doubt you could get even close to 640x480 of a laptop
ALSO
now that i'm working with a lot of DV based stuff even some of my computer generated files are getting compressed to DV pal @ 720x576 DV compression.
