I have some visuals I'm working on but need a tune to composition with. i don't want to get booted off myspace or youtube or wherever for copyright, just want to show off some work to a decent tune

Make friends with a local DJ or band, they'll probably donate a track.

I considered this asmd, but i'm a lazybones..:P
not fussy really nic. Maybe i'm getting old but my g/f's daughter plays something called 'hardcore' which involves loads of shouting and thrash guitar, i'm not so keen on that kind of stuff. And I think if it's dance <=135 bpm.I like my techno and house but they aren't so popular as genres it seems today.
edit: well hell, hardcore is ok. I don't want to appear like some kind of 'Marilyn Monroe' type

hi !
record tunes of some internet radio stations.
i do not know the copyright issues, but as long as you are not going to make money with it, i guess it's not illegal.
ie.

Hardcore = Crap :).....just buy a tune from beatport and use it. Just publish the track details when you put you visual mix on youtube. The audio quality is so bad it could not be ripped and used anyway. You'll be giving the label, producer,DJ publicity ;) The track will only cost around ?1.90.

That is just plain wrong.
Just because you are not making money of it does not make legal.
In reality just because you are not making money off it makes it less chance of being prosecuted/legal action.
In fact it could be argued that the music, etc is boosting your career and giving you publicity so and it is in fact a commercial venture (even if you are making no money).

Fair point there. The internet is saturated by young DJ's and mixes and I add in decent quality audio. The fact that they are mixed makes it harder for the tracks to be used but it does happen. Still there is no action.
A track being on Youtube accompanying a visual track will receive no unwanted attention.
1. The track has been purchased
2. The track is in such poor quality in audio it cannot be used
3. Track publicity ie
Visual mix by VJ wetmypants
Track title remix by DJ wipeitup
Label notissueleft
Good publicity of the track may even receive a thank you from the label :)
Downloading from the radio is certainly illegal if used and if you want to have the track published in decent quality then you must have Producer and Label permission.

Take a look at www.soundclick.com/djhectic or
www.myspace.com/hecticmusic
Choose any of the tracks on there and see what sort of visuals you can do. I would be interested to see that.

check out this track.. i call it 'switchfoot', the style would probably be called DubHop. working on it for a few months, i am happy with where it has got to. might be appropriate..

I've just had the same issue as I am putting together a promo DVD. The safest solutions in terms of copyright are:-
1) Purchase some Library music off the internet it will cost you a small amount (ave $29) but you are buying the rights to use the music.
2) Find an up and coming musician on myspace etc and ask for permission to use their tracks. You will find most people are glad of the extra
publicity, but make sure you get something in writing so they can't change their mind later on. Also make sure their work does not contain any uncleared samples.
I'm not sure on the legality of using DJ mixes, unless the DJ has clearance from each artist involved.

but it could also the other way round: so i am boosting the career of somebody.
i am not scared of taking a dj mix of somebody i know or i am in contact with, without telling the person, that i have streamed it over the internet.
