Hi y'all I was wondering howmany of you pro's have a "setlist" that is your big red line throughout your performance like a dj for example.
I know a few and they sort out their records at home so they have a set completely done, all they do is have them mixed together....
when performing do you work the same as the dj in my example or is it just a big pile of VHS tapes that you stick in random order into a vcr :P
and how do you build up to a climax?
thnx

IMHO, that approach simply wouldn't work for a VJ (at least at the sort of gigs that we do)
The pace and style of the music is dictated by the DJ - s/he is not going to look at yoru visuals and say "hey - I'd better play a slower tune to match the visuals"
Unless you are part of an AV crew, you are always going to have to take your lead from the DJ.
For some nights that we do, we will have a pretty good idea how the music is going to go, so we do havea vague plan about what material we will use at different points of the evening, but this is always subject to change as DJs depart from our assumptions about what they will play.
While we're on the topic, I also think that DJs who go out with a fixed set are a bit crap. They might be amazing at one gig but at another, they might not be in tune with the crowd and their set will go down like a lead balloon. The best DJs are the ones who react to what the crowd is liking - they are the ones who can rock it every time.

If you preplan your dj or vj set .. you have to ask yourself what your presence adds to the evening, because you could just as well be replaced with a tape.
That is not to say that you shouldnt try to plan ahead, just keep room for improvisation.
The only DJ's I know planning complete sets are kind of beginners, who sort their records in groups that mix well together.

copy that a good idea is to know all your material (or if you made it yourself knowing which tape is which :)) and build ,by following the dj's move : forget a setlist , just listen to the dj and respond. only if you have a complete solo show (doing audio + vid simultaneously) well then a setlist could be handy (jls invisions that he has no idea which cd/dvd he's holding in his hand and if it has to go in the dvdplayer or the cd player) br rrr  hmmz yeah it would def be handy :)

yeah i free form it, unless doing an av set w/ a set list. isnt it amazing how many synchronicities happen when you free form. i think sychronicities are a very untalked about common subject. i know ive seen the most amazing "randum" things link up and make sense, ive seen so many in my shows infact, that in a way im a little desensitized about them, im like oh theres another one. they do help me remember the magic though.
