---- ABOUT ME -----
I'm Surya Buchwald aka Momo the Monster. If you don't know me, you can take a look at http://www.momothemonster.com to get a feel for my credentials and whatnot.

There was a lot of talk for a while in the VJ Community about starting a VJ Magazine. A group even started recruiting - vjmag.co.uk, you might remember, but nothing ever came of it. Well I still think it's a damn cool idea, and I'd like you to be involved.

To show that I'm serious, I've designed a site and written a couple of articles. You can see them at vjkungfu.tv. Go ahead and check it out for a minute and come back.

----THE IDEA EXPLAINED ----
It's a Motion Magazine, digestible in text form on the website or an RSS reader, or in video form through iTunes Video Podcasts or Internet Video Platforms like Democracy (http://www.getdemocracy.com/).

Every article has a video. We are performers in a visual medium, and we should all be able to craft excellent videos. Every video has a text article accompanying it, for making lists and spelling things out - things done best in text form.

So far I have focused mostly on instructional videos. There's so much specialized knowledge involved in the field and so much mad-scientist hackery that I think this can make up a large portion of the articles. They can focus on pieces of hardware or software, content gathering and preparation techniques, performance styles, etc.

Further ideas for articles:
1. Previews of VJ or AV releases.
Short (30-60 second) pieces of longer releases. They can point to something available for free or something available for purchase. The accompanying article can include a rundown of performance and production techniques used.
2. Previews of VJ Content
A montage showcasing performance-ready content. Again, we can feature both free and purchasable items.
3. Online Battles and Games of all sorts: After-Effects Tennis, where two or more artists bounce footage and/or music back and forth. Pass-it-along games where each person adds on video where the last person left off. Pools of performance-ready footage with seasonal themes.
4. Reviews.
What better way to show the ups and downs of a particular program than with a demonstration of what it can do and what its output looks like?
5. In-Depth information on VJ Products
What do all the settings on the Korg Entrancer look like? What can I do with the undocumented MIDI port on my Numark CDX?
6. a VJ Glossary - perhaps make this a Wiki. All about colorspace, cables, codecs, formats, framerates, adaptors, etc.

----WHAT YOU CAN DO ----
We'll need lots of Writers, and a few Editors. We need people who will put the word out to all the VJs they know and help them make videos.

---- MONEY ----
I've paid the startup costs for this Magazine out of my own pocket, because I believe in the idea, and I'll eat these costs if necessary. I'm all about the free spread of knowledge, and I'm open to business ideas from anyone who knows about such things.

With that in mind, we could use someone with good business know-how who could figure out how to monetize the site, at least to make it self-sufficient for bandwidth costs. Right now I have a plan where I paid $382.80 for two years of service, giving us 400GB of storage (increases weekly by 2GB) and 4TB of bandwidth/month (increases weekly by 32GB). So it costs $16 a month to run at the moment. Most of the infrastructure work is done - videos are converted to Flash on the server, and the entire thing is powered by the Open Source Wordpress system.

---- THE END ----
So let me know what you think. Check out the site, subscribe to the RSS Feed or Video Podcast (http://vjkungfu.tv/feed).

Thanks for kicking this off Surya. We would definitely like to contribute content to help get this off the ground. Let us know if you need anything specific.

I was planning on opening up to Banner Ads once we've got a steady flow of articles and a growing user base.

yeah, thats kind of what i was thinking...i got really excited and then thought, hang on, im already using a version of this... but the video articles/tutorials is a really good new idea.
i would love to contribute, but already have quite a lot on various plates, but as time allows i'd love to help out. although i expect my expertese (sp?) is in areas of limited interest to most people, i reckon others could do a better job on the more popular subjects.

I would love to read something like this. Every time i go to a newsagents i think... I wish there was a VJ mag (instead of having to read dj magazines back pages where I get a whole 2 articles on vjing). Could you make mnthly .pdf's for me to download and print for on the bus etc.?

Waxninja - I like the idea of a monthly or at least semi-regular compilation available for print-out. I suppose we could insert screenshots or something, since a driving force behind this site is the visual aspect.

I like the idea of doing things like After-Effects tennis, especially if they play with the present, like do visual puns with today's news.

I like the concept . . . here is an idea: Why not make at least 50% of the site free to use and interact with and the other 50% is available to subscribers only that pay an annual fee? A good example of this business model can be found at the espn.com website.

The subscriber perks could include free VJ clips, discounts on software or hardware through referal system to software and hardware resellers, guestlist to VJ events, etc.

I have a rather large collection of visuals on both VHS and DVD that I have bought over the last 10+ years as a VJ. I would be happy to write some reviews for the site to familiarize other VJs with some of the releases I have in my collection. I will do my best to provide links to buy whatever I review but some of the releases are likely out of print.

Sponsorship would be a better all round alternative - hardware and software manufacturers really have no media channel to reach thier niche vj market. And the free'r it is the more people who will use it.
Search u-tube for the regular hack5 e-video-zine which is quite well done and free to access.
But hey don't let my comments phase you - great taht this things finally gonna happen. And a video zine is much cooler than a yechy printed one :)

if there was going to be a printed one... and hey, sometimes if there is a spare ten minutes, it is cool to read something ... instead of the videos (how cool would it be to have removable video patches) you could have the article writer/content provider make 5 different still image PICT exports of their mov, so the printed form could have relevance.

It would be really nice to see regional reports on "the wide world of VJing" segment. Segments like this could be printed, with other video related segments being available online.
I could provide a regional report for the intermountain west if this would happen.

pixy - tell me more about this 'wide world of VJing' segment idea. Would this be a recurring article - like you would update what's been going on in the intermountain west of USA once a season (quarterly)?

Sounds like a great way to internationalize things. And I'm absolutely down with getting a PDF version going - maybe also once a quarter.

yea that would be the jist of it. I would compile a list of events happening in colorado, NM, utah, wyoming and try to make it out to some(or have friends of mine attending report on them) and then compile it in a quarterly report.
if there was a network of us doing this, we could have a decent sized bit in that quarterly PDF:)
