Not sure if the AV place is the place to put it, but I stumbled across this whist browsing for my gf for xmas.
MIDI Theremin (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MIDI-theremin-like-controller-for-synthesiser_W0QQitemZ330056854987QQcmdZViewItemQQs sPageNameZRSS:B:SRCH:GB:102)
Looks like a lot of fun. Just a heads up for all those looking for something new to fiddle with.

Yeah I keep seeing those around. I use a Handsonic (http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct00/articles/rolandhpd15.htm) when I'm being a muso which has what Roland call a D-Beam which can be programmed to do similar theramin like activity.
It's very cantankerous to set-up to control external midi stuff though as some of the main pads, the ribbon controllers and the d-beam have 2 or 3 levels of operation which i reckon use 2 or 3 midi msgs per pad/beam to allow for simultaneous sensitivity, edge and touch control of a sound - conga slaps, talking drum etc. - it's like trying to set-up a multi axis joystick via junXion (http://www.steim.org/steim/junxion.html) or wrestle an octopus.
Gave up on the first - the octopus wrestling thing is still on my 'To Do' list.
These gadgets look like they may be more simple to sort out.

I Bought exactly the same dvnt, and it's a pretty nice tool, very reactive..
The only problem I have is that the midi signals are notes, and I would have prefered a CC value sending signal from 1 to 127, to fade visuals, or scratch loops.. But you can reprogram the cheap if you have and electronician friends, I'll try to d this soon..
It's also fun to control sound and effects..

yea it does look like a right giggle. I have no idea if u can change the notes to cc values. email the guy I think he mentioned he made this thing?! (don't hold me to that ;) )

Yes you definitely can change the values to cc, it's not really a theremin, it's only an ultrasonics sensor, with the usual "micro controller" to convert voltage to midi signal.. They can easily be re programmed, I can't wait !! :)

no he didn't say that. Its monday, sue me! ;)

I made a thing like that for one of my classes:
http://itp.nyu.edu/~gpv206/2006/11/midi_lab_a_midi_theremin.html
Total cost of parts, about $45. That's including the Arduino microcontroller, which can be replaced with an Atmel processor for $4, bringing total cost down to about $20.

Wow that's cheap. Any more available? Really could use one for a installation I'm working on.
Anybody?

just to clarify, a theremin is a x/y axis controller (volume / pitch), the units presented in this thread are y axis controller, generating notes or controller from distance data.
me, i'm quite satisfied with the performance of xyz infrared controller on the alesis photonX25 here
but if u'r looking for a simple diy unit generating midi data from distance
to an infrared sensor check http://www.stoffelshome.de/m_ir_dyn.html
(german only or babelfish it)
and don't miss the http://www.stoffelshome.de/lightboard.html
while ur at it :)

yo guys,
I'd love to see one of you really creative types make one of THESE into a theramin for visual triggering, perhaps even with the intention of audience participation...

the Sega "Activator"

pretty much a game controller.. u moved your character by breaking beams of light.. was a lil hard to use for a game so it kinda flopped...
but perhaps it could work for abstract visuals?

I was hoping such a thing as a theremin midi controller existed, I want it to link up to play live sound from lap top, the link has expired, any more info would be great especially if anyone knows where I could get one would be appreciatedNot sure if the AV place is the place to put it, but I stumbled across this whist browsing for my gf for xmas.

Just found the same midi theremin available on ebay:
