Want to pick some brains ...
Who of you are handling as well live visuals and audio simultanously?
Do you pull it off alone?
Gear?
Personally I'm fascinated by what people like ColdCut , Headspace, etc are doing ...

I do sometimes.I hook up my Vision Mixer through the dj's audio mixer and drop in the sound from video clips over the music.
Thats about the height of it.

I'm workin on it!
I'm part of a band and the idea is to allocate visuals to certain audio-loops.

Me and my identical twin brother Scott McCall aka DJ p1LL spin every other friday in Downtown at a place called the Loft. Tonight is one of those nights :) p1LLy mixes MP3s on his custom built 'MixBox'. it's off da hook YO!
I'm also doing visuals at Extreme in Downtown every other Saturday (inc. tomorrow night) but don't know who to expect DJ-wise

Hmmmm I thought Mbassy was asking if anyone does BOTH visuals and audio themselves, not for an advertisement of your residency.

Well that was indeed more the reason of my question  :alien:

No partners, just me at the moment...
I'm using final scratch linux on the audio end.... cross platfrom Ibook/pc on the video end with motion dive/resolume and two mini dvd's. I"m thinking of adding the new edirol mixer to this setup soon.

the whole visual thing started for me as new thing that I could add to my otherwise audio performances. Of course it got totally out of hand and grabbed most of my time.

I?m a full time Mobile DJ (14 plus years). Just in the last year I started adding Video (mtv type) and in the last few week I have started adding VJ type stuff to my show.
I have started with Arkaos.
So, I?m a DJ first, VJ 2nd.

Tom,
You as one from the inside ... when performing is this a teameffort, so to speak ... audio by some-one/people video by some-one/people ... coordinated through rehearsal ... or is the audio pre-integrated in the visual part, or vice versa ...
Had the impression that in ColdCut one is doing the video stuff while the other one the audio ...

i'll use the pompidou show as the example of the direction Coldcut and Headspace are heading in.
John plays DJamm (loop based audio remix software - like live with 16 coldcutters!!)
Matt plays VJamm with audio visual samples
Mark also plays VJamm with AV samples
Mike plays VJamm, VCDs and miemi without audio as backing track - thats fed into mark and matts mixers
Camilla does live camera mix
I mix output from matt, mark, mike and camilla and send out over multiple screens using a matrix switch
some tracks are more DJamm than VJamm some tracks are played almost intirely from av samples in VJamm (at the moment its mostly DJamm audio with AV samples layered ontop - but we're moving towards more pieces that will be just VJamm)
watch the stream from the pompidou gig here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/media/g2/djs/peel/vj.ram)
for a standalone solution i would get an Akia MPC and use it to trigger AV loops in VJamm - its very powerfull as you can trigger sequences from it and it has a very good audio sampler that you can use to run the basic audio track from whilst jamming over the top

I'm doing the A/V thing solo and it is VERY hectic.
one computer with flowmotion, one with ableton live
actually not really solo, my gf is supporting with live percussion and vox .. but its me behind the a and v machines.
Looking into getting both an MPC and VJamm pro later this year to enhance this setup.

I just finally got myself a USB midi adaptor and midi keyboard so an jsut about to start playing with VJamm in an AV context, I'm looking @ using VCDs with audio base track and video, combined with my normal TZT/CVI setup, layered with Vjamm AV triggered from midi..... should be FUN :)

Interesting all this ... thanx a lot for the insight Tom ...
Personnally I would consider the mpc 2000 overkill if triggering is just involved as you don't need velocity etc ... it would be ok if you're going for the mpc for sequence creation as well ... One could go the Akai mpd16 controller route ... these pads (like on the mpc) just ask to be tapped ... there finally start to come midicontrollers with mixed button/sliders/knobs controls [ have a look at the novation remote 25 - my personal choice for the moment .... http://www.sonicstate.com/news/Images/novation_remote25.jpg ...
sw wise I'll stick to Abbleton Live for the audio part as this is what I start to know inside out .... once I have the Remote25 [or other] , I'll have to figure out how to combine it with most probably Vjamm ...
Looking forwards for more input on this subject!

Oops, my mistake, just realise you mean to use the mpc to midi-trigger visual sequences, not manual triggering ....

Don't have one yet, M0rph, but @ 400$/Euro -ish it is in reach :p [sound of nickles and dimes being counted] ...
This was the pressrelease :
novation: Novation has entered the mainstream of the desktop computer music market with the launch of its revolutionary new two-octave MIDI controller. The ReMOTE 25 is designed for use in conjunction with a wide range of software and hardware, including sequencers such as Cubase, the Reason studio suite and Novation?s own rack modules, including the new V-Station and the K-Station series.
With the launch of the ReMOTE 25, Novation is seeking to give musicians the ultimate balance of technology with performance. The 25 note keyboard with aftertouch is semi-weighted to give the trueness of response and smoothness of action associated with Novation?s conventional keyboard instruments, while the array of sliders, knobs and switches brings the hands-on feel and control of studio hardware to computer-based packages.
Full compatibility and user programming
All controls are fully user-assignable and there are 64 user-programmable templates, each containing over 60 parameters. These include 50 factory preset templates for packages including the Reason suite, the Native Instruments range, Sonar, Cubase and Logic.
The ReMOTE 25 is supplied with coloured control identification strips customised to the specific applications, as well as a supply of user-definable strips. Additional preset templates will be made available through the Novation Website at
Dedicated transport controls make the repetitive process of stop, start and recording within any sequencing package faster and easier. If a specific sequencer template is called up, other buttons perform alternative common tasks such as locator marks and track creation. Four function buttons can be programmed to select a new template quickly, or to scroll through templates, send snapshots or transmit a panic command.
Portable power
ReMOTE offers true portability, with the option of battery power or an external supply. Six C size batteries are required, giving up to 12 hours of operation, while external power can be delivered either over the USB connection from a computer or from the dedicated power supply. Rechargeable batteries can be used and they will recharge automatically when an external supply or a USB cable is connected.
Hands-on control
In keeping with the Novation design philosophy, the front panel is comfortable and simple to use. There are eight rotary potentiometers, eight sliders, and eight rotary encoders, together with twenty four switches. A bright backlit two line silver and blue display feeds back all the important control information, from the name of the template selected to the name and values of any controls.
ReMOTE also brings the expressiveness of a conventional keyboard to the desktop, with a joystick for pitch bend and modulation, as well as a touchpad which may be programmed to control multiple parameters in the X and Y axes. For example, a distortion amount and pan position can be assigned to the horizontal movement, with an LFO speed and filter cut-off on the vertical movement, giving a wide range of dynamic creative options from a single control.
The pitch and modulation control mechanism allows for full real-time performance. A switch on the base of the keyboard enables the modulation (front to back) travel to be static or spring loaded, and the hand grip is rubberised for maximum ergonomic feel and ease of control.
USB or MIDI-ready
With the option of MIDI or USB connection, the ReMOTE 25 can be used without the need to purchase a separate MIDI interface. For MIDI users, there are two MIDI Out ports and one MIDI In, and information originating from the RemOTE keyboard or its controls can be sent directly to the USB port and/or any of the MIDI Out ports. The MIDI ports can be used to integrate a full MIDI set-up with a computer system.
The Novation ReMOTE 25 runs on Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 and XP operating systems ( MAC OS X to follow ) and driver software is included with the unit. US MAP pricing is ?249.00, including VAT.

I've been moving into a/v realms for a while now...
I think I'm getting closer to my ideal setup which at the mo' is:
Rebelle w/2 VCD/DVD players for video source and some audio bizness
JoMox X-Base09 drum machine for live drum programming
Electrix MoFX for flavah

I just bought this Midi controller keyboard from Edirol:
http://www.edirol.com/products/info/pcr30.html
I use it to control Reason at the moment, but I'm about to use Reason and the latest version of Pixelshox (macOSX) which has midi support. Should be intresting.
This keyboard also has the "Vlink" feature. Your supposed to be able to sync any Vlink hardware kit to another by the touch of a button (like the V4 mixer !!!). And control the mixer from the keyboard.
Its got two seperate midi buses, on for the notes and one for the controllers. And it is USB compatible and USB powered.

but only roland devices have "v-link" - as far as i can tell its just midi anyway - might be intresting if they relese the spec! in the mean time do you fancy pluging you keyboard into a midi monitor and seeing what it does when you push the vlink button (and if it changes any behavior of say the pitch wheel)

Midi monitor ?
Is it software or harware (maybe the two?). I suppose its just a thing you use to check the Midi signals going in and out ? If their is a software version (Mac if possible but PC would be Ok), could you tell me where to get it, and I'll check.
But yeah I suppose its just midi signals at the end of the day v-link or not :)
Although it can be usefull to press a single button and have all your controllers asigned properly.
Hum, I'm looking forward to having a go at it on pixelshox, got a go :)...

I am working on an Edirol PCR 50 (like the PCR 30 but with more keys) and it's a really nice MIDI controller for visuals. Comparing it with the Oxigen8 you get more knobs, more sliders, toggle buttons with 0-128 values, and twice the number of keys.
According to what I know, the Vlink option can only be used with the AV7 (or something like that) : some kind of very expensive Hippotizer-like video console made by Edirol. The PCR keyboard can use V-link to talk to the AV7, the V4 video mixer can use V-link to talk to the AV7, but I don't think the V4 and the PCR 50 keyboard can talk to each other without the AV7. I'll tell you for sure next week : I'll receive my own V4 and test it with the PCR 50 ;)
What I know already : it's simply the best controller I've used with visualJockey !

Hey, I got the PCR-50 too. And I used it for visuals yesterday for the first time, on the latest version of Pixelshox. And I didn't sleep :) Its just great. You can really follow the sound, in mood; beat or intensity.

This isn't exactly what people are talking about, in the sense that it isn't a fully live A/V set, but I'll give you an example of what I've been working on.
I've been trying out what is essentially a DJ set with synced video. I'm doing sort of a downtempo thing where I'll play a couple of tunes and do live knob-twiddling of visuals, then switch to a film short, or song. I use the music as a sound bed sometimes, and have a section of video over it that is sparse enough to lay on top. I scrounge up obscure clips/songs from movies and mix them in.
Example:
-Some live video tweaking over a song.
- Christopher Walken singing a song and dancing from "Puss in Boots"
- More live tweaking over a song
- Keep the song running and lay audio/video of Jessco from "Dancing Outlaw" over the top.
- Pre-edited original video to a friends song
etc...
My aim is to book myself at a club for the opening set, when people are coming in and aren't really dancing yet, then keep doing visuals for the rest of the night. This way I have a bit more of a saleable act to take on the road. I'll probably incorporate a DJ pal if it takes off at any point, so that I'd be free to do more live fooling about on the tracks, and they could have more control over the music.

yeh these kind of sets are great fun - we do quite a bit of this kind of thing in the summer at festival with the groovy movie - the worlds first solar powered cinema
its quite hard to translate to a proper club environment though as it tends to end up being quite down tempo and interspersed with short films and stuff people want to sit down to watch (not that theres anything wrong with sitting down - just a bit wierd in a night club)
i love doing these sets - its like a crazy cut up cinema - short film followed by music video followed by strange political documentry followed by a song out of a musical - its really fun seeing peoples reaction to things - biggest cheer i've got was for one of the charlie says public infomation films i showed at glastonbury!

we being, two dj who mix it up and I, who take a feed from them which can manipulate/bend the video i am making.
soon we hope to be in a position to take it back the other way and introduce sound from the video back in over the music.
Djamm sounds very nice. I have not heard of it before this post. Has it been released to public?

nope DJamm is a custom app made by camart for the coldcut live show - a relese was planned to acompany the next album but this now looks unlikely as a lot of the DJamm paradigm is covered by ableton live - other than the chop fucntion which is now available in vst plugin form as the coldcutter (free download from http://brightonart.org/coldcutter.shtml )
