I wish to cature an avi in the best quality
suggested compression method
would be greatly appreciated

I will be capturing 640x480 and wish to
play them back at best quality

yeah bro i've been messing around with codec's, and really it depends what your standards are and the what performance your equipment is capable of.
i've been looking at what the limit in quality is when ripping clips from dvd's, although the same principals can be applied to any form of capture.
i've been ripping the clips uncompressed, if you have the drive speed and space this is the limit in terms of quality, i then take the clips into discreet's combustion and add effects/ colour correction, i could export from here in most standard codecs, however combustion does not support miniDV so i export as a targa sequence then convert this to DV in premiere.
this is of course being abit of a dick about quality and there are quicker methods but if you are keen on the best quality...
in terms of codec's pic video MJPEG on quality setting 15/20 seems to work pretty well.
if anyone else out there has any advice for the quality purist i'm keen to here any advice.
