Was wondering if someone could describe any cold cut experiences they've had?? What's their Vj style like?

About sums up alot of our experiences, I would say they have brief moments of genius, but maybe in general VJ's may not be the people to ask as we are hyper critical.

However my memories too are of blue screens, crashed machines and basic errors. To be honest after the first few errors the actual content becomes much harder to remember and the mistakes take over.

Matt Black needs some of us lesser mortals to show him the way again in my book, coldcut's success seems to mean comments like this never reach him, or maybe he just aint bothered. Either way the mistakes are too common and easily fixed, their playout often is not as professional as their status suggests.

everybody is basing their views on a spectacularly bad example of the coldcut show. the show at cargo was not a good example of coldcut live and has to be viewed in the context of being the first show with a totally new technical setup.

later shows in the same tour were much better and did not feature the range of errors and mistakes show at cargo.

Matt + Jon remain excellent producers and i challenge anyone in as high profile a position as them to even attempt a genuinely live performance of the same complexity.

coldcut live has always been a level of complexity beyond what any other live AV act is attempting - on more than one occasion this has resulted in a less than perfect performance, however i for one would rather see people trying to push things forward technically and artistically then see perfectly mixed content.

if you want AV with no risks then you can see addictive tv or hexstatic both of whom play "live" from prerecorded dvd content. it's slicker for sure but it ain't pushing anything forward...

I think there is a clear distinction between VJs who entertain themselves and VJs who can entertain other people.

the technology is irrelevent in the latter category. It is central in the former.

Not just one bad show tom, didn't see the cargo show but have seen them 5 times, and only once without errors. Tom its not about how hard they push the limits its also about competence, and leaving blue screens up for long periods, not switching to something else, computers startup screens, dvd menus, projector messages.

Its not about what they achieve, it takes no work to fade the mixer down or if your accessing dvd menus use a preview monitor so the crowd can't see the menus and only sees the clips, if a comp crashes to switch away from that source. Its makes no difference how hard they are pushing things if the crowd see's a blue screen for a 30 seconds in the middle, and no one on stage seems to notice.

I'm not saying they are not hard working or good producers, but why do I keep seeing the same errors?????? why are they incapable of switching a bad source off?????? It does them no favours.

It just is starting to feel like an endless trend. Whatever the tech, dvd menus, blue screens and alike NEVER need to appear to the crowd for more than a fraction of a second if caught unawares. But it marks many of the coldcut shows and Matt Black individual VJ sets.

Actually Tom the last time I saw Matt Black visuals (I missed the Coldcut set) was at the Big Chill 2006 and equally bad then and there was no super duper tech setup then or at least it didn't look that way.

He was only playing a DVD - reline 2 - one track over and over again and the menu title page appeared maybe 3-4 time in the half hour I was there.

I am sure he had another excuse there too. Using new tech like a video mixer or DVD player or something.

Sorry Tom but me and others have seen multiple bad shows from them. How can I give him good press when what I have seen a bedroom VJ would be embarrassed. The old school VJs might hold them in some kind of unjustiable awe but other do not.

Hmmm.

I've seen them twice, both this year and I don't recall any gross technical errors as you describe. The most noticeable were the badly miss-matched projectors (colour/brightness) and playing clips with obvious blue backgrounds and then not keying them over anything... though this could have been intentional!

Both gigs have been hugely entertaining both for my friends and myself (viewed with a technically critical eye), and the amount of kit they use is just mind boggling so I can understand that errors can happen.

However, to make frequent rookie errors like that is terrible and to not have addressed this is rather worrying. All it takes is a couple of master out preview monitors and an emergency video feed (like a crowdshot) on standby in case of mishap.

devils advocate time....

i saw Coldcut at Glade this year, and i thought they were f***ing blinding :D

realy nice wide screen (8:4 ?) set out above them, with Coldcut themselves working in a line beneath the screen. at points the areas directly above each performer were used just by the performer below it, so you could realy see how they were making up the piece between them.

i realy realy enjoyed the visual and a/v aspect as well as the tunes themselves. its the only time ive seen coldcut, but personally i wouldnt hesitate to go and see them again!!

Agreed, that sounds like the same lineup I saw.

Tess, is this related to your collaborative media assignment thingy?

I have just caught these guys on their new world tour in Auckland.

No probs what so ever except for the crowd wanting more and more.
The 2nd encore was a jam so it didnt look as tidy, but apart from that I was pretty much blown away as this was the 1st time I have seen them live.

What they are doing was/is groundbreaking with all that tech stuff in front of them.
HEy sometimes I blue screnn and show my dvd menu and I only use 1 v4. Those guys have one each I do belive.

Hats off to them I was really impressed with what they done.

Dj Shadow had more tech probs than Coldcut. :moon:

saw them last a big chill 04 - very good, but with a few technical errors.....
and glasto05, but i used the hour or so that they took over the screens in the dance tent, to go and get fed as i'd been playing all day, so only saw the last few minutes. hmm.. just saw they are here in marseille in three days time...possibly/maybe.

i don't how/or how much of the stuff from all the new videos turns up in the new live show?? but some of the videos from the new album are pretty good as well..

i really like "walk a mile in my shoes" with robert owens....

None of the videos from Sound Mirrors are in the live show. However they do have a natty remix of the Robert Owens track and True Skool with Rodney Roots Manuva. I did record some of the tracks they performed on the night for their mycctv show where you can upload all of your video of the concert which is being made into a dvd I presume.

Let me know if anyone wants to see this as I could upload to youtube.

I was lucky enough to attend the Red Bull workshop with Matt B and it was pretty cool. Gave lots of hints and tips as top what they (coldcut) are currently looking to go into.

They aint scared of sampling either :poke:

All this time I've been jealous of you folks across the pond because you have all the A/V talent simmering over there, but it sounds like maybe all the bugs get worked out on your end before the shows make it here. I've definitely seen alot of first shows of tours where all the seams were visible. I've seen video of those tours further in, and all the flaws have been cleaned up. So, from my perspective Coldcut are batting 1000, but I can see one-offs and tour starts giving them a bad average in their country of origin.
