it could be fun to organise some VJ FORUM member "arena", there allready an AVIT night in Milano, but it could be really pleasant to make some "fight" during the festival.
the big mainstream room are allready "assaulted" (see it on Contatc europe forum) but medium room still not defined.
then why not try organise something ?
all interrested VJ (michael ? bigloose ?) could contact us in private and already define some question :
- which gig's length ?
- which kind of music ?
or do you trust in the strange french VJ to organise that ? :D
let's fight !!!!!!!!! :D

i dont think were actually gonna do it as an AVIT room, cos that will be confusing if any of the euros ever get it together to do an AVIT Europe, we feel that the AVIT name should be reserved for festivals/events put on through vjc/f but we who organised AVIT UK will be organising one room at CE but we havent decided yet what well call ourselves/it

fighting talk matey boy, lol
so how does one go about haveing a vj battle then?
kommy
18th May 2003, 11:25 PM
a true battle would consist of two screens right next to each other with two separate vjs -going head-to-head, and theyre both mixing to the same music so you could really tell who was better
spark
19th May 2003, 12:05 AM
well... at avit we had six vj crews together going out through a matrix to many many screens, and at contact europe there were five clear, large screens in a row each driven by a different vj... that count!
unjulation
19th May 2003, 01:10 AM
reckon that will do matey
but i was wondering about the whole clash thing 'cos in a sound scape thing you either sound s**t or you dont and we have the ease of not going on that trip, if the music is good then people will still walk away fealing good, even if the visuals are c**p
i.e. we aint realy that important within the whole space, so from that we can actualy move on and do some thing good
wether that be a rip or a self created visual it then becomes an iralavaciy
s**t i love carveing things in stone, as long as no one keeps me to them, lol

maybey i shouldn't have been so graphic but the whole ego clashing within peramaters of the perticular situation or "designated game" is a perticulay interesting number that i think is part of our hardwireing so we got to take it on bord as an aspect of who and what we are
sory i'm runing on a perticular trip "a moment of clarity" as it were, lol :)

I'm just not at all sure about this preponderance of "conventions" and "symposia" - what is their function and what do people expect to get out of them? You don't see hoards of DJs getting together, showing off their latest "licks", I just worry that they are a breeding ground for those who like the sound of their own voices, or those who aren't getting enough gigs! I, personally, would far rather that my work spoke for itself, the place for sharing info on softs and hardware, surely should be here.
unjulation
26th May 2003, 10:49 AM
actualy there are more dj's shakeing there respective body parts at each outher and walferling on about there latest white lable (what do you think the dj world championships are about?) then you get vj's, mind we just go on about the lastest bit of tech, again horses for corses, and of corse your work speaks for it's self, in fact the whole point of this was to let your work and now hears the point the actual playing skills are on show netx to someone else's skills which can only push you
again i repeat
ego can be a great motivator tho a lousy leader
but, admitadly can be a trecherous companion
i mean if you aint got an ego you might as well spend your time navel gazeing up some mountain you might well reach nivarna but it's going to mean diddly squat to the rest of us liveing a life, these natural motivators are the things that have moved use on as a race, that and the desir for sex and the amanzeingness of the imagination
Lara
26th May 2003, 11:19 AM
Wow conferences and shit are so important for so many reasons- when I first started vjing i came down to AVIT, made a load of great friends, saw a load of kit and more importantly saw the work of people pushing their sets imagery wise and techn wise. Its a great boost for the imagination to see what people are doing, and to ask them questions there and then is really so different from the forums.
At contact europe, there were no big ego clashes, people just got drunk together and had a great time. Tech was in its place. And as for competition well that's natural- but it was seriously good to get some enlightened feedback about sets instead of the usual munter nonsense. And I had some great chats about the nature of vjing, and about the copyright copyleft debate.
:)
Jaffa you've got to come to the next contact europe and see for yourself . . .

I'm confident that none of the DJs that I've worked with have got the time or nor the inclination to ponce about in some world championship event - and I will never see this craft as a "duel" or competion. As Brian Eno once said - "Listen to the quiet voice" - I've seen footage of these "championship" events and they are definitely for the dick-swingers. Unj - I cannot agree with you about the ego being a motivator - Sure, it can be a motivator, but the outcome of any work motivated by ego is going to be facile to say the least and at worst, self-indulgent horseshit. As a VJ, I consider my job is to provide visuals as an adjunct to the musician/DJ, the two should complement each other and, ideally, the whole will become greater than the sum of the parts. My work as an AV artist is quite different - I select music and with the blessing/collaboration of the artist, create video pieces driven by the chosen music. Ego does not get a look in in either of these guises - in fact, a little humility is more than likely to be prevalent.

Sorry Lara - In my long career in the Art and design game I've been to far too many of these types of things. They all had the same massive flaw - preaching to the converted. If VJing was a new phenomenon, I could understand it, but Its not - folks have been squirting movies/video onto screens at gigs for decades now and for the most part, little has changed bar the technology. For my money, the content is and always will be the key issue, and if you'll forgive me, my content has been evolved and developed over 30 odd years of professional design and art experience and Im clearly focused on where I'm going there. I'm not interested in the technology, its just another paint brush / pallete - a means to an end. All the other stuff you said that happened happens at gigs and festivals (well it does for me anyway) where we are there to do our job - to entertain people!
To be fair - if I was twenty something and inexperienced, I might have a different viewpoint! But I now find these self-serving events a bit tedious. If you came away with something from it, then thats great, and I wouldn't want anyone to think that my opinion is anything other than that....
Lara
26th May 2003, 12:45 PM
Completely understand . . . different strokes for different folks and all. Hmm agree with you that content is king- you are right takes a long time to develop- think that's why people turn to tech sometimes.

i'd argre with you if i was a 20 somthing but as a thirty something i have now gone throgh both the ego of youth and the decline of e physical, and i'll tell you haveing had "fun" in my early years i know the reality of what that can do to you, and after 20 years of art and theatre based work i allso know its the work and content that wil cary you through to the next step, but you gota have a laugh along the way
and i honestlay think that a bit of helthy compantition is good for both prties involve, now i know ware compotition can lead to but who ever said i wanted to go there
i mean ther only reason that i'm not threternd by all this is cos i'm old enough and dare i say wise enough, and dont you start snigering at the back, lol:) not to be botherd about this kinda thing and see it for wat it is and enjoy the game that it is, hay i dont even care if i dont win any of these chalanges to my ego, cos i know i'm still going to continue doing my thing
aaahhh.....grasshoper you have become like the reed ;)
so i surpose that to me its just part of the game that we play called life, some of the rules aint fair, some are and some of them you'd have to be a blind watch maker to come up with
it's just that haveing gone and sat on the metaphyisical montain you realise that ego (in its most simplistic for as being a sence of self, not as in i'm the best) is a requierd aspect of our being and without it we end up not being a part of the world around you
well.........thats what i found :)

this is ware i think the misunderstanding comes from
ego is just a sense of self that has meny factors to its personality each with pro's and con's

Unj - do not confuse Ego with self-awareness!
Lara - you coming to the "Summer Chill"? if so - we ought to talk!
unjulation
26th May 2003, 02:24 PM
ah this is true but without ego in the first place you'd have no desire to be self aware, stange bed fellows i have to admit but there you go!
sureley a lot of our indervidual understanding comes from desire therfore ego, to be in a situation that it percives as "better" then it is now in, what we lern along that road/journey is anouther thing entialy
to me its like being honest about our place within this industriy, when we can deal with that we can get on with the job at hand, meny a time have i clashed with people that claim to be egoless and yet there whole internal dialog comes from it, lets not go the road of non interaction with our multi-facated selves, sureley the way to go would be understanding of the various aspects that make us who and what we are and not one of internal domanation based upon a docteran that might well be out of date
anyway the debate continues
