I really thnk your best learning from someone in person.... find a VJ in your area and learn all you can. :)

personaly i'm self taught, which can be a problem with the technical side, especialy when i listen to some people and there talking tech, but the art side of the v.j'ing has been all my own work, now i'm not saying that i don't use sampeled stuf but i just got a computer taught my-self premiere, made some loops and got some v.j. prog demos chose the one i liked and i was away.
what i am finding though is that 'cos i'm the only v.j. in our crew i miss being able to bounce ideas around like minded people, ah well all in good time.
now geting a gig, as you might expect might be a bit more dificult, which is why i work with a groop of people to put the whole sh-bang on, they will never say no you carn't play and 'cas they dont know how to v.j (i do keep trying to show them but in one ear out the outher.) they are constantley serprised with what i do which is good for the ego but not so good for my personel development, it is allways good to get some kind of negitive feed-back it pushes you ferther but is not as nice

"well all u need to do is to able to read and writh . "

you have to see the irony in that statement..

my advice...
coming from someone who was asking himself the
very question...

i couldn't find anybody to talk to in indianapolis..
so i started talking to club owners.. what do you
want? how can your shows be better...

get to know local djs.. check out their shows..
try and find out about any vj events that are
near you.. read about equipment...

have you heard about the new rhinocerose tour?
the stage is whited out.. including equipment, band
members, everything... then video is projected onto
the stage...

i ramble.. .good luck... and explore the site.

OK my first answer was over simplistic although it is great to get to see and chat with another VJ (and may even play with thier gear a little bit) first.

Then once you have some sort of idea of time/cost/skills etc.... start learning software, a 3d package, editing package, capturing video, paint package, etc....

Figure out gow you going to get you new clips onto the screen with both hardware and softwear, eg. full screen/zoom, what software to use, are you going to use a computer @ all or VCD/VHS and a mixer......

Download and experiment with all the different softwares and see what suits you......

Eventually you will wanna hook up with other VJing you area to discuss things, make all the contacts you can... learn as much as possible.

Ask lots of questions..... read FAQs..... be an active VJcentral member :)

The only advice I could give toward creating good relationships with other VJs from your hometown is to try to make yourself useful. You have to actually prove you can help another VJ, even if it is just in a very specific way, and then you should see some positive feedback. Try to learn everything but also try to specialize in something, try to build a specific set of skills that other VJs will come to rely upon in the future. What have you done to this day that is related to VJing ? Can you provide some loops to other VJs, or build a projection setup, or film some shots, or do studio lighting, or make-up, whatever you know that could extend the work of another VJ.

Just be on scene. go to lots and lots of clubs. and make a point of trying to meet as many club involved people as possible. I think i`ve probaly got all my jobs from just being around all the time expressing a a desire to create things for people. Always take time to talk to any tech guys on site they know lots of useful people.

Aside from this just make sure your ready for that time you get offered that gig. cause there will be a panic otherwise, i`ve done it myself, spent so long chasing that job that i didnt prep my material .
