Ok after the VJForums Awards thread leading off into contest talk, thought I'd start a thread on exactly that
If people don't like the format or theme then start up one too, no harm having multiple contests.
Evomedia's dirty contest
DEADLINE: 1st November (gets all the festival season out of the way)
THEME: DARK DREAMS
FOOTAGE: I don't want to restrict so use what you like, I want to see how everyone approaches the same subject. Whatever you want to use video, abstracts, whatever...
TRACK:Still picking one upload one tomorrow
Judging via Poll on VJF that I reckon should be anonymous so I'll set up an ftp if people want a hosting space.
I'll organise a club in London somewhere for screening if people would like. Might be a cool night out.
At present a bit of fun. If enough people interested I'll sort a prize.
Anyone interested in that?

Ill certainly give it a go! On the music front, are you looking into whats available under the creative commons licence? Im sure there would be a decent crossover of varying styles to choose from. (warms up the V4) ...

Are you after music? If you join Beatport you can be solely responsible for selecting the track. You can browse by genre. Anyone wishing to enter the comp can join beatport and buy/download the track.
1. We can't be accused of file sharing music files
2. All can access this site.
3. Tracks are only on avarage $1.99 or so.
4. We are supporting the DJ'ing/producers community:) = 1 nil to the VJ's
In order for the DJ's to equalise a decent DJ will have to play at the night to be organised...lol

I'm looking at creative commons tracks at present not filesharing illegally, and asking a few DJ producers I know if they have a track they can donate.

I've been giving it some thought and wonder if getting people to select their own track (creative commons) would be better than me just picking one. I'd suggest it all be the same genre (progessive house electro house or deep house) to allow someone (no idea who yet to play them out on some dvj decks for all us to watch by organising a club night at halloween to screen them, that means no copyrighted material so self created or creative commons footage like archive.org. As dark dreams seems like a good theme for halloween, that would mean moving the submission date back to october 20th. As lots of entries with the same track although easier to judge may become very tedious audio wise. I've been thinking if we can create some great vj sets then who know may be able to promote it as a piece and may earn us all some money with an overall winner or best of choices.
Any thoughts anyone?

hmmm, nice idea, i like.
but, why do we have to restrict the music to one (overly-specific) genre. surely part of the interpretation is finding a piece of music that fits the theme?
plus gives us the opportunity to showcase our own, or friends productions.....

Drop the idea of progressive/electro/deep house and set it free. Black metal seems pretty dark to me.

Cool I'm happy with that... don't want anyone feeling they can't enter because the music or footage restricts established strengths.

loving the sound of a halloween comp!
and theres no reason why if we get all the rights sorted there couldnt be a dvd release of the best ones, there needs to be more quality music dvds in hmv

What about using EBM/Industrial?
There are a lot of really dark compositions of that genre, dealing specifically with dark dreams, etc.

TBH i think the restriction of footage to licenced CC stuff is too much of a bias towards self creation and is not representative of the current VJ scene. I'd suggest that its vital to allow the use of uncleared visual samples to be representative of the current VJ scene. whilst this would limit the usability of some pieces on a dvd release it would not nessaceraly make the whole project illegal.
if the piece is for halloween and themed around dark dreams then its well suited to a horror film remix type approach for example and i would not like to exclude people who wished to take part by producing such a piece.

Lol ok I conceed, all I'll ask then is when we get to submission time, people let me know if there content is legal or has unlicensed footage or music

In that case we are in!!! I was totally thinking a horror film remix type project and was hoping to change it enough to not be noticed!! Can't wait to get started.

Well we are proceeding with the contest, Myself and my fellow control freaks vj's are of course not entering ourselves being our own contest. I am getting in contact with some relevant hardware companies to see about sorting some prizes. i'll keep people posted.
But if you fancy entering I welcome you and look forward to seeing what the community produces, its a good way to produce some new footage for your own library at any rate so hope we see some creative entries.

I'd be fascinated to see the figures underpinning this statement. ;)
